When  I try to restore the database, I get "data error", and
all the data is destroyed.

Insufficient data.
What did you want to do?
What did you do?
What is the exact error message?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Wanted to restore the collection using the backup, just tried to do that.

Error message was just "data error".

Probably your backup file is corrupted.
If you don't have any other other backup files you can try the alternative method.
For downloading your online collection do the following:
Go to DVDProfiler menu "Online -> DVDProfiler online ..."
Follow the instructions until you get to the options "upload" and "download"
Choose "Download"
This will bring back your collection except for custom scans, tags, etc...
Sadly your online collection seems somewhat outdated (March 26th 2008), so for the future please use both backup solutions frequently. It really helps in case of emergency.
