I have a film ("The Hi-Line") with an image aspect ratio of 1.85:1, but it appears to be window boxed (black bars on all sides) within a 4:3 frame. It's not anamorphic.

Which boxes do I check for this?

What if the film just had the usual top and bottom black bars?

Looking further, I see that it's even more complicated ...

My artwork DOES NOT have the "Limited Widescreen Edition" banner on top, but you'll see the aspect ratio listed on this site as 1.33:1.

Amazon lists my version as 1.33:1, but movie-list says it's 1.85:1.

This is bizarre.

Perhaps uncommon nowadays, but not so uncommon some years ago. It's a non-anamorphic widescreen release. In the video format section you tick widescreen, but NOT the 16 x 9 enhanced box, and then list the 1.85:1 aspect ratio.
When watching a release like this on a widescreen TV, you use a zoom feature on either your player or your screen to make it fill the screen.

If you only had black bars at the top and bottom, you would have an anamorphic release and you would tick the 16 x 9 enhanced box as well.
