The on-screen credit for the film Opera Jawa has a credit reading "Special Makeup Artist".
Would this be the same as Special Makeup Effects and therefore go under Make-Up Effects? Or should it be listed under Make-Up Artist, since it doesn't say Effects? Or should I just leave it off? | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

Going by the credit itself it's unclear what 'Special' means. Perhaps 'Special' means they do a Special area of Makeup, perhaps eyebrows or lips. |

Slightly OT: There is lots of variation in the actual on-screen credits as far as art-credits go. I just contributed a new profile ("Elephant Man" blu-ray), where one credit was "Elephant Man Make-Up Applied by Wally Schneiderman". I included this credit with a note to screeners informing them about the actual wording used. They haven't made up their mind yet... I don't really know, if the list of acceptable credits in the rules is 100% exclusive or just a list of examples - and whether we can use interpretation at least in cases such as this. | | | Mika

If it is listed apart from the regular make-up credits, that would be a clear indication it wouldn't be regular make-up. I didn't bring it up because it's in Dutch. This article makes it perfectly clear to me that most likely Special Make-up Artist should be considered Make-up Effects. | | | | Cor |

The next question then becomes whether or not a credit reading "Special Makeup Artist" is either a functional equivalent or a direct translation of "Make-up Effects" (the film in question is Indonesian, however if I understand the OP correctly, its credits are in English - US or UK?).

| | Posted: | | | | Yes, the film is Indonesian, but the credits are listed in English on the DVD. The DVD is released by The Global Film Initiative.
All of the makeup credits are listed together, under a heading of Make Up & Costumes Department. The makeup credits are as follows:
- Make Up Artist
- Assistant Make Up Artist
- Special Make Up Artist
Perfectly willing to change the submission if folks think I should.
