What is the easiest way to install SP3 for XP?  Should I use the Microsoft Update feature? (Someone told me this wasn't safe.)  Should I download it?  Has anyone had any trouble using SP3?

I've updated a few computers to XP SP3 using the MS update without issue.

Where very far from the big f***k of SP2.
You can install it from MS update or download from the MS web site without problem

There a ISO "Windows XP Pro SP3 retail" you can donwload with SP3 included and will work with your original windows key

Or use this website WSUS Offline, download the software and use it to either download sp3, updates or make streamed installation cd's/dvd's.

The risk you are referring to might be Windows Genuine Advantage, which will get downloaded automatically when you use windows update. You can not even use the windows update if you do not download it.

Which is why i never use the Windows Update and only use the software from the link mentioned above. It works without the WGA or any other bs that Microsoft would like you to install disguised as "high priority update" .

but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming: 'WOW What a Ride!!!

The trouble with installing SP3 exists only on a few specific PCs, although it is difficult to point out in advance which. Trial and error, and some hardware vendors have offered repairs through BIOS updates.

I have one computer on which I made three tries, all resulting in total failure (computer did not start anymore, repair failed etc.) and needing Windows to be reinstalled from the CD-ROM. Needing to reinstall applications, losing settings, some data... I was actually happy to move to Vista.

You have to have SP1 to be able to install SP3. You can get the exe file from Microsoft's website, if you don't like using MS Update. You will probably run into more problems if you dont install it.

Thanks everyone for all the replies.  I appreciate them.  I originally forgot to say that I'm currently running XP with sp2 installed.

It seems my fears were unfounded.

I've been using this for years now. Also great for updating a clean Windows installation offline.
