The risk you are referring to might be Windows Genuine Advantage, which will get downloaded automatically when you use windows update. You can not even use the windows update if you do not download it. Which is why i never use the Windows Update and only use the software from the link mentioned above. It works without the WGA or any other bs that Microsoft would like you to install disguised as "high priority update" . | | |

I have one computer on which I made three tries, all resulting in total failure (computer did not start anymore, repair failed etc.) and needing Windows to be reinstalled from the CD-ROM. Needing to reinstall applications, losing settings, some data... I was actually happy to move to Vista. | | | | Hans |

You have to have SP1 to be able to install SP3. You can get the exe file from Microsoft's website, if you don't like using MS Update. You will probably run into more problems if you dont install it. |
