I am a little confused maybe.

If a credit says a "John Doe Production" and the actual producer is John Doe, does this really constitute a production company?

Does John Doe run a company named after himself?

I'm afraid that the answer is: "sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't."

Usually not, but there are times when it does.  The safe bet, unless you know for sure, is to leave it out as it is usually a vanity credit.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

This is one of those grey area studios that can't always be determined at first glance.  It usually requires a little bit of searching.  I ran into a weird one the other day.  It was something like Andrew McKeown Presents, which I would normally not even consider, until I noticed in the copyright was Andrew McKeown Presents Ltd., meaning it was the name of his studio.

Agreed, it usually requires some investigating to be sure. I've found that it's not an actual studio more often than not.
