I came across this designation "Based on Character Created By" and was wondering if it would get an  "OCB" or "Created By" credit under the rules

I would call it OCB, but I can see the argument for the CB.

Another reason for name variants and functional equivalents, because the current wording of the rules does not allow either of it.

Rho:

We have explored functional equivalents and they open the door to user-abuse. The answer is Open creds, list what you see, then you and your harping about functional equivalents have no argument. Even with all of the potentoal nightmares caused by open creds, I would rather see that than the user-abise caused by functional equivalents.

The other possibility is faster response from Invelos when these credit issues come up, though in this case there appears no controversy. But functional equivalents, by whose call, yours? Mine? I will say with the background I have as it relates to the rules, mine would probably be closer to what was planned. But thanks to the abuse that is heaped upon me...no thank you...I don't want it, nor do i want yours or anyone else's. So the answers are Open creds or faster Invelos response, Open creds is easier.

Me as well.

I don't like open credits. I want credits with standard role names as we have it now. I want the director to be credited in profiler as "director" no matter if he is credited in the film credits as "director" or "directed by" or "Regie" or "un film de" or whatever. Those are all functional equivalent role names to "director" and should be entered as such into profiler, as it is written in the rules today. But I do want to extend the concept of functional equivalents to those cases of name variants which are not listed in the crew table of the rules.

The problem Rho, is that our Generic Roles leave much to be desired in terms of telling what something is. Visual Effects is the most recent such mess, we are shoe horning so much information in there that the data is NEAR worthless. This could be mitigated somewhat if users would list the ACTUAL role associated with a Profiler generic if it is different. It would then be part of the record for that title... and for benefit of some users, I do mean list the role in the notes EXACTLY as it appears On screen. Then we have some real data and there is some solid context to it, also with the data being in the notes, if the Actual Roles are there then it is a simple matter of cut n paste if other users want to put it in their custom Role field.

Rho, I am no fan of Open Creds despite my support for them, the concept horrifies me. I am no more interested in Accountants, Gaffers, Grips and so forth than the man in the moon. BUT, big BUT, if someone is interested in them I have no right to say he shouldn't be able to, all I want is to be able to select that data that I AM interested in. Open Creds solve one of our biggest problems, ARGUMENTS, they go away, no more will I have to listen to rho prattle on about Functional Equivalents (being amusingly sarcastic) or listen to someone bring a new Credit to the forums and the resulting arguments, back and forth and inevitable insults. The4 answer to open creds is universal and the same for ALL, see it, type it, if you don't want to enter all the data, that is fine, we are NOT required to do so, the user who does want it all is free to do so...as long as I can decide for my own database exactly what data I want easily then everyone wins and the data is absolutely CORRECT, no arguments, no more "but the Writer's guild says this" or the "DGA says that", just copy what you see. I should be so lucky as to live long enough to see this endless nonsense, abck and forth ansd insults end. But i won't hold my breath.

Just a personal opinion here... but I always preferred what is actually in the credits over our generic roles. I like having the profile accurate to the actual DVD whenever possible.

I like what we have now...the generic role with the option to enter the actual credit in the custom field.  For me, this limits what can and can't be entered.  What I hate about what we have now is that the custom field is erased...unless something has changed...when you accept an update.  That is the only reason I do not use it at the moments...oh, and it is a little too short.
