I agree and disagree. Let me try and explain. I still think the answer is Open Creds, with all their own issuses (length, gasp).  All functional equivalents are going to do is continue to cloud the water. Further, the more we try and account for functional equivalents in whatever category, the more we will find that we will have to say No, not yet, maybe next Rules change. Open creds, and I fear them as much as I like them, amke everything much easier, no definitions, no shoehorning. See the credit, list what you see, and you can list as little or as much data as you want. Once the data is Online it can't be removed unless it's wrong and hopefully that would be an infrequent issue. The big challenge, I think, would be in the update area, suppose somebody wants to list the Crew data for LOTR, ALL of it. How do I deal with that, do I take the update and remove what I don't want, is there some sort of system that could be implemented that would allow us to pick and choose exactly which crew update data we wanted. Still lots of questions. but inthe long run I don't think functional equivalents is going to help us very much.

Even now I am using the Custom data field to spell out exactly what Isee On Screen. For example, Costume designer might become Costumes by. I find that information far more informative than most of our generics that we are trying to shoehorn so much into.

My opinion would be that a credit of "Camera" is closer to "Camera Operator", as they are the person holding and operating the camera.
"Camera Operators" are explicitly excluded from both DP and Cinematographer roles in The Rules™.
I am sure the filming unit for Dennis Pennis' location shots will be Dennis (of course), Director, Cameraman, Soundman, and a couple of assistants. There will be no equivalent of DP/Cinematographer.
