David Tennant has reportedly been tipped to play Bilbo Baggins in the movie adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's book The Hobbit.

According to The Telegraph, the 38-year-old Doctor Who actor is up against stars including James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe for the part.

More information on the movie - a prequel to the Lord Of The Rings series - is expected to be unveiled at next week's Comic-Con expo in San Diego, where director Peter Jackson is also said to be announcing his choice for the role.

It was recently announced that Tennant had joined the cast of the upcoming St Trinian's sequel.

Out of the three named in the article, it's no contest as far as I'm concerned, David all the way.

I've been advocating him for years, I'm glad it's finally starting to pay off.

Seems a little old for me...I always imagined Bilbo to look a bit younger.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Bilbo was born 2890 TA (Third Age) / 1290 SR (Shire Reckoning)
He travelled to the Lonely Mountain and became the ring bearer in 2941 TA / 1341 SR (= 51 years)
He gave the One Ring to Frodo in 3001 TA / 1401 SR on his 111th birthday.
He went to the Grey Heavens in 3021 TA / 1421 SR

Keep in mind that Bilbo "hasn't aged a day" (as Gandalf has put it) since he became ring bearer until his 111th and Frodos 33th birthday.

That's pretty much what I was about to post DJ. Really then he's too young but I'm sure that they can age him appropriately.

Of course it would be weird if a blue police box would suddenly appear in the center of the five armies...

He should look slightly older than Frodo in LotR but not by much.

(Of course he looked older in the flashbacks but that was Ian Holm and he's not available, or too old now anyway.)

That doesn't change the fact that I imagined him looking a bit younger.

In any event, I've always pictured Bilbo as comfortably middle-aged.
"This movie has warped my fragile little mind."
