On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing, NASA has released restored footage of the Apollo 11 mission. In view of the extremely poor quality of the original, I think the results are remarkable. You can watch it here.

You know it's a conspiracy, the 'moon'-landing was filmed somewhere in Arizona.

Unfortunately, I can't use DVDprofiler at the moment due to lack of a Windows computer.

NPR did a story on the search for the tapes this morning.
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!

I thought they were stored in Kubrick's old warehouse.

What they have is looking much better but the real story is disturbing. Apparently, NASA erased the original recordings and are restoring the TV broadcast footage. What is worse is that there was a second set of original recordings that were recording by us (Australians) at Parkes in New South Wales, Australia that we sent to NASA that they have lost as well. Story here.

I heard about NASA having destroyed the original film footage, but not about them having lost the Australian recordings as well. Shame on them!

It never ceases to amaze me how careless broadcasting organisations deal with such historic recordings. Here the tapes of the original broadcast of the moon landing were erased as well. Fortunately recently some recordings of that broadcast were found in the attic of some hobbyist who had recorded it back then.

There's a good documentary, Live from the Moon, which is supposed to be on DVD later this summer that talks about this.  Essentially, NASA was totally focused on the science end of it and as engineers were totally oblivious to historical importance and public relations.  This is also seen in the fact that on Apollo 11 they put the camera on Neil Armstrong and not on Buzz Aldrin, so we have lots of photos of Buzz on the moon but only two very poor ones of Neil Armstrong on the moon.

I can understand how something might not seem important until many years later.  But we landed on the freaking MOON! How could someone not think that was worth keeping?

In order to keep sane I have to believe that they were just pulling old tapes for reuse and didn't realize what it was they were overwriting.  I can't comprehend someone deliberately making that decision.

I don't see the big deal.  Going to the moon's a pretty simple affair, hell, it's not rocket science is it.

Look how bored America was with the moon visits by Apollo 13 - the news agencies didn't even air the live video from the astronauts.

ETA: Assuming that bit from the movie of the same name is true.

I have to admit the moon never looked that interesting. Dust, craters, more dust...

Nice view of the Earth though!

Apollo 13 never made it to the moon, (only a slingshot trip)  and,  I don't think Americans were bored with The Apollo trips until 15 or 16 ..
