You will see on the bottom of the song credit a statement like: "Courtesy of record label name | | | View my collection at http://www.chriskepolis.be/home/dvd.htm

If i'm unsure I:
- Look to see if the song was performed prior to the film release on an album
- Find evidence of a copyright date
- Make sure the writer(s) weren't dead when the film was made (comes in handy when removing invalid credits...Scott Joplin in The Sting)
- See if the writer has an acting role in the film (works best for non-song writers...Tommy Lee Jones has a writing credit for Under Siege)

| | Posted: | | | | I usually stick to what I know was for sure written for the film (easier for me since I'm into rap and many movies from 82-99 were made mostly for the soundtrack), then try to find a link to back my memory up.
The 'courtesy of ___ records' is usually a good sign, but not always.
Lately I've been finding it easier to remove songwriting credits than add them. Lots of audits either have the wrong people credited (stage names when writing is under real name), only the main artist and skip the co-writers (who deserve just as much credit or they wouldn't have the credit), and many just list their favorites, usually when the songs pre-date the film by as much as 10-20 years.
I'm thinking back to Nine Inch Nails on The Crow soundtrack. Yeah their song was new for them, but was a cover over 10 years old and had original writing credits from Joy Division. Trent Reznor was still given songwriting credit by someone, despite his name never appearing in the credits (only a small "performed by NIN under the writen by credit). Playing favorites doesn't work. |

Same here... If I remember right, I have contributed a song writer once, and that was with Tarsem's "The Fall" where he and one of the actors in the movie were credited as song writers, and the song title was a direct reference to a scene in the movie. If I am unsure at all, I just don't contribute them. | | | Mika

As Tweeter noted Oscar noms are a giveaway, James bond Movies are a giveaway, if you have a song title that matches the film I think generally speaking you are on safe ground, but even here i am careful because I have no doubt someone will say what about this title, where the movie was actually derived from the song not vice versa.
It's a sticky wicket to be sure.

| | Posted: | | | | I would like to thank all of you for your responses. I was about to submit 3 more song writers to Wooly Boys. Curt Sobel had already been accepted and as he never wrote any of the 3 songs by himself, I was going to give credit to the ones who co-wrote with him. I think I will leave well enough alone. Thanks to all for the excellent information.
