Hi, I'm new here. And english is not my native language, so sorry for mistakes.

Well, I contributed a DVD from "Gonin 2" that wasn't in the database. I own that thing, scanned the cover and added some data.

Same thing with the Hong Kong dvd of "Godzilla vs Mothra.

Well, I can't read japanese kanji, so I took the cast from imdb.com. Because of that, the contribution was declined. But where else should i take the cast from?

And the scanned covers were also declined...but I have no idea why...?

Re you comment about IMDb. I have some sympathy BUT we don't uise IMDb nor any other third party database for such data under any circumstances. I would suggest that you look up Godzilla vs. Mothra in our database and simply copy the data from that. I would suggest that probably a Region 1 US version is likely to be the most reliable, the 2002 release from Sony looks like it could use a little modification but looks generally OK maybe.

First of all: welcome to the Asylum!

Taking the cast from IMDb is not allowed in any case (both because IMDb is very inaccurate and because it would be a violation of IMDb's terms of usage and could be cause for legal action against Invelos).

In case of Asian DVDs submitting correct cast and crew may indeed be complicated. If there are English subtitles for cast and crew, use those. If there are listings on the cover, you could use those as well. Other than that, all you can do is wait for someone who can read kanji. EDIT: or follow Skip's suggestion. Here's how to "clone" profiles, as it's called.

Besides: romanization of Japanese characters is a difficult issue anyway. Fellow user Taro has recently launched a proposal for how to do this in the Contribution Rules Committee.

About the decline of the covers: I have no idea why either. Perhaps it's just because it makes no sense to have scans in the database without accompanying data?

In the particular case of Godzilla movies, a little care should be taken with using a simple copy and paste from a region 1 release.  Most all of these movies were imported by AIP and they were re-edited and dubbed here in the states.  Needless to say, they then spliced their own credit sequence in giving credit to a bunch of Americans mixed in with the original Japanese crew.

Thanks for the quick answers.

So it would be okay if I:

-Make a new entry
-use data from EXISTING profiles in the ivelos-database (and say that when I contribute it)
-if there is no data (credits and so on), I don't fill in data
-and then I can also contribute my dvd-scan

(and of course I should remove the "old" contribution from my online-collection )

btw: in fact I really am learning japanese right now. It's not very much yet, but I understand some words. But I'm really afraid from learning katakana, hiragana and kanji...sore wa totemo muzukashii desu ne

hey there,

you are not forced to fill in every field

Just fill in what you think is correct and always give a source where you got your info from.

For example: rating submiited from back cover

and yes, a warm welcome to the forums

cheers

Thanks.

Don't worry, I don't feel forced to fill in everything. If I would do so, I could never complete my online-collection (144 up, nearly 2k to go...yikes).

Anyway, thanks again for the hints. I will - if necessary - "clone" Profiles.

But one thing for example: if I contribute an japanes movie that is NOT in the database, and the cast is on the cover, but the rolenames are not, is it okay to fill in the rolenames when the source are my ears? I know some japanese folks and I think I'm (mostly) able to write the names correctly romanised.

Sorry for all the questions, just want to do it right.

Don't be sorry.  We want you to do it right as well so ask all the questions you feel the need to ask.

We are all quite happy to see a new user that wants to contribute.  When that user also takes the time to make sure they are doing it right...well, that is just icing on the cake.

Welcome to the jungle.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Questions are good, much quicker and easier than re-submitting bad profiles.

I would say absolutly yes to filling in the roles from your ears, if you can understand the language you are a valid source.
The only thing wrong I see is you say "names on the cover". All cast and crew should come from the movie credits. The cover can only be used in the rare case it has cast/crew the film credits missed, and even then some don't like it so it's iffy.

Okay, I'll double-check it - if necessary. Thanks.
