Ok, so I submit a contribution for Dana Carvey's stand-up special, Squatting Monkeys Tell No Lies. When I submitted the profile, it added his Birth Year in the contribution, but I didn't add this, but since I was submitting other things I added it.

Now I get a no vote telling me that it's not listed in the BY thread, which I have used and submitted to in the past. Anyways after talking to the user, he has Wayne's World DVD (097363-270645), without BY and mine does. I also have it on the BD version (097361-429847) and This Is Spinal Tap BD (883904-132585). How did this happen? I have looked over the contribution notes for titles listed above and none of them, list a BY. Is this something the profiler program is doing on its own?

Don't know, but it begs the question of just how many Dana Carvey's can there be?  Frankly, I've got to believe any BY would be pretty damn suspicious.

It is possible that you picked it up in a headshot database download.

That would be my guess also.  I ended up cleaning ut a lot of BY's after the installation.

I won't do it again...

Sorry, Mike, BY has a specific purpose at Profiler, not just so you can send Dana a birthday card. And this simply doesn't meet the requirements, if you wish to list such BY fior yourself, that is fine and you keep it local oNLY, that is why there is acheckbox for the BY data, so that you can Contribute data that is per the Rules and keep data which is not where it belongs.

"Enter birth years only when necessary to differentate between two actors with the same name. When submitting a contribution that adds a birth year to one or more credits, list justification in the contribution notes."

Now if someone has managed to get such bad data into the database, then why would you propagate it, making the problem even worse, the correct thing to do would be to REMOVE it.

Did you even read my post? I said I didn't add it, it just appeared in the program.

One way you may inadvertently end up with unnecessary birth years in your local database is by importing headshots. Some of the files that are available for download contain unnecessary birth years (although most headshot contributors are now aware of that problem), and if you restore such a file to import the headshots, the birth years are getting restored as well. And it's quite a lot of work to get rid of them again...

In regards to headshots, the v4 database only has BY's that were in the Invelos database when it was released.  Note that this doesn't mean they're valid, just that at the time Invelos said they were.

v5 will only have BY's that are in the BY thread.  So if you like headshots, you can wait until I release a purified DB or if you take other submissions, restore them into a temp DB, strip out the BY's, and then backup/restore it into your main DB.

I don't download any headshots, that I know of anyways. I mean I have the little head image next to the person, but that's it.

Not to sound stupid, so is this the reason why some users have BY's, while others do not?

Entirely possible.  The quickest way to get undesired BY's is to import someone else's collection (such as headshots) directly into your main database if they didn't do any cleanup first.
