I was bored today and wrote a proof-of-concept app to analyze the results returned by the Credit Lookup Tool. Think of it as CLT Plus.    Basically, it works as following:

- You enter a name to search for, just as you would do with the CLT, e.g. "Anthony Stewart Head".

- You get a list of existing common name variations, e.g:
Anthony Head  (100 profiles)
Anthony Stewart Head  (50 profiles)
Anthony Stewart Head  (10 profiles)
Anthony Head (1950)  (10 profiles)

- Clicking on one of the names above lists the corresponding profiles.

My questions to those of you who use the CLT quite often:
Is there anything else needed?
Should cast & crew results be separated?
Matthias

It should allow for double first names.

In a similar line to that, there are quite a few names that have been downloaded that have all been entered into the first name field so they should be checked as well.

Very useful, and reducing a little bit the guessing of what alternatives may be out there. What would be the next step, running the Name Variants tool on the whole online database?

Since the CLT searches by the "Credited As" name (either explicitly or as constructed from the common name), all such variants are already included in the results. My tool simply groups those results by all unique variations of the underlying common names. Something Ken should have done in the first place, but since he is busy with the iPhone app...

I see. Thanks for the clarification

If it is at all possible, I would love to see the option of separating cast and crew.  If for no other reason than the fact that cast and crew are explicitly pulled from different tables, so a name collision in one table may be perfectly fine in another.

Since Ken has stated (if my recollection is correct) that the number of credits (films) should take precedence over the number of profiles, would it be possible to get that count?

I know that is the hardest part since the same film can be scattered all over the CLT results depending on the language of the profile and how the original title has been entered. I look at the role and cover scans to help determine the film count.

for your effort Matthias!

Maybe a stupid question, but is title count in the CLT based on the "Title field", or the "Original Title" field, because the original title count is what we need.

Matthias,

This sounds very useful. If there is a way to have it also match for first/last name swaps (like your name variants plugin does), it would help with Asian names!

It would also help with Hungarian names.

It's based on the "original title" count, but it also takes the production year into account: the CLT will report "Name" (1981) and "Name" (1982) as two separate "titles". Unfortunately, many profiles in "smaller" localities don't have the "original title" field filled in yet. Also, the neverending confusion between "production year" (the name of the field) and "theatrical release year" (what we actually track in it) accounts for quite a few multiple counts.

If your boredom leads to such results, I think we'll have to talk to your boss whether it's possible to get you sacked immediately.

Great job!
Thank you. I hope that if the name linking doesn't come at least your improvement will be implemented.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

How did i miss this thread last week?

Very nice.  I look forward to trying this.

Going back to the sample name you started with, "Anthony Stewart Head" ... the tool will find variants including those with/without middle names?  Assuming it does i'm going to toss out one of the really hard cases...

How close to a complete list of these variants could be found in one search?
