I just found out about Invelos and am in the process of adding my DVD/Blu-Ray collection. I initially started inserting each DVD that I have and letting the program detect the title automatically. After I got to 50, I realized that this was going to take a long time to do it this way, so I'm wondering if I should just do a title search for the rest of the DVDs/BluRays in my collection? I noticed that the program couldn't automatically detect information from DVD+R discs. Some of the DVDs I inserted were not detected by the profiler. I had to open and close the DVD drive a couple of times to get the program to detect that there was a DVD in the drive.

One DVD that I had the program detect was 'The Last Castle.' For some reason, the profiler program was prompting me to add the French translation of the DVD -- or at least I think it was French. I had to do a title search to get the DVD profile inserted in my collection. Since I still have a lot more to add, here are the questions:

Why does the DVD sometimes not automatically get detected?

Why is the program trying to add a profile for a DVD that doesn't match what's in the drive

Why would the program try to add a French title from a Region 1 DVD?

Hi! Welcome!  I don't know if I can answer all your questions, but I think I can help on a couple of them.

First is, you're probably better off using the UPC code on the back of the cover rather than disc id...Disc Id does take longer and may not have been submitted in 100% of the profiles, while UPC is almost always in there (there's a few exceptions, but they're pretty rare unless it's a child profile, but the parent will be in there under the UPC).

Not a hundred percent sure this is what you mean for adding a profile that isn't what you have in the drive, but sometimes a disc id can have multiple matches.  The US version vs the Canadian version is one I see a lot.  Is this what you're seeing?  You just pick the one that matches your locality.

The French translation of that dvd may be the only one that was entered for that disc id.  Check to see if the title you found matches your UPC and if it does, if it has a disc id.  If it doesn't, that's why it didn't appear when you put it in the drive.  If the UPC does not match, try downloading by UPC rather than disc ID and see what pops up.  If nothing does, you have a new profile that you could enter and submit (read contribution rules, first though!).

Don't forget it is a user built database.  That means that you might not automatically find a profile in the database...that just means that you can be the first.

As for DVD+R discs...well, we do only submit legal, manufactured discs to the database which usually aren't DVD+R (though I know there are exceptions).  If it's something that you have made yourself, though, you can make your own profile.  Just unclick the download profile from Invelos button on the add DVDs to owned screen and you can start building from scratch.

Hope this helps...

If you are thefirst as LJG noted, be sure to read the Contribution Rules FIRST, so you know what to Contribute and how to go about it. This is one the biggest errors made by new users, failure to read and follow the Rules.

When I first started collecting DVDs, I didn't have that many so I was able to keep the cases. The collection gradually got larger and so I moved them from the case into a soft cover binder. As I was moving from place to place, it occurred to me when unpacking that I had a box labeled "empty dvd cases." I ended up getting rid of the cases and now keep my DVDs in the soft cover binder. I have the original cases for my blu-ray discs as I am keeping those seperate from the DVDs. The only DVD cases I have are the ones for box sets and I have kept the cases for the blu-ray discs.

There might possibly be a problem with the DVD drive on my computer, because sometimes when I inserted a DVD, Windows didn't bring up the auto-play dialog box even though auto-play is enabled on the drive, and in the instances where Windows didn't do anything with the DVD inserted in the drive, the profiler also didn't do anything.

In the instances where the profiler couldn't recognize the DVD automatically, the title was correct with the disc id and so I just typed in the title of the DVD and then went to IMDB to search details of the DVD such as widescreen/full screen, aspect ratio, and run time. I then used Google Images to save an image of the cover. I've done all this with the download profile option checked. I'll have to check on the Last Castle DVD again and see what the profiler is doing for the automatic recoginizing in terms of title, but then there was already profile in the database for it so I just used that.

I've been reading about entering box sets. I understand that ctrl+F12 is used to find child discs. I'm planning to enter the box sets for 24 and Band of Brothers. I wanted to make sure that it will show up in my collection as a series and that it will list each of the DVDs for the series.

It should should up as a series.  The parent profile will be the complete box set, then by attaching the child profiles, you'll get the disc profiles attached.  You'll probably see a + sign next to the main profile, which indicates that you've attached other profiles to it.  As long as there are child profiles created, you won't have a problem downloading these...and while I don't have either of those series, they're popular enough to likely have them.

Hmm, well, not having UPCs is a hard one...not sure why the discs aren't reading as I've been able to grab disc IDs from most DVDs.  My thought is that you might just have not as "popular" titles where not as many people have them so there hasn't been as much work done on them or that you have a lot of burnt DVDs that aren't DVDs that can be shared with the database...but that's what the local is for!

Not to hype on something you probably already know, but I see that you're using IMDB info...please do NOT contribute this.  All information for the database is to come from the disc itself, credits, runtime, ratio included.  Anything you keep local is fine, but please don't upload it...

I looked through the programs options, but couldn't determine if it was setup by default to contribute information. It was only a few dvds where I used IMDB info, but I thought that I was entering information for my own database. I would like to contribute, but I need to learn more about this program and how to contribute something. I've completed entering my DVD information, and I entered it by title. I hope that I am not doing something incorrect here. Is there a way to go through my list and get the details added where they are missing?
Edit:  I've entered the box sets I have by UPC and encountered a problem where the information could not be retrieved for one disc in the series. How can I download the information for that disc? Additionally, I noticed that the discs for the series aren't necessarily in order. For 24 Season 1, it is setup as 3,5,2,4,1,6.

Don't worry - uploading your collection to the online is separate from the contribution process. You need to actually select Contribute Profile from the Online menu and fill in a notes field before you've actually contributed anything, so you can't do it by accident.

For the 24 season, have you taken a look at the sort title?  Often the sort title needs to be changed to get them to go in disc 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 order, as it's set up alphabetically.  I usually have to modify that to get them to go in order.

As for the one disc that doesn't download...are you sure it's in the database?  I've seen instances where 1-3 and 5 are in, but disc 4 isn't for one reason or another.  Otherwise a way to check by title is to type in, say 24, whatever season it is and then see if any disc id profiles pop up...they're easy to spot in the title lookup.  They'll have "disc" in the title and the UPC will be the disc id.  It's a chance that for some reason the disc id was not identified as the belonging to the right box set.  The ability to automatically detect child profiles is fairly recent (within the last few months) and there are some out there that haven't been attached yet, I think.

I just about have my list complete. There are just a few things left to do.

I've looked at the sort options, but it isn't immediately aparent which sort option will keep the list sorted by collection number or title and then within a series, arrange the discs in numerical order. As far as the one disc from the series "24" that wouldn't download, I deleted it from the collection and re-added it and was able to get everything dowloaded.

Lastly, how can I go through the collection and any DVD that has missing details will get updated?

It's the sort title that you're looking for to organize.  It's in the edit screen (double click on the profile), and the 3rd option. Title, edition, then sort title.  The sort title tells the profile where it's home is.  You can pretty much do anything here...If you want all your James Bond together, you can name them James Bond 1, James Bond 2 and so on, while the actual title stays correct, but will list them all under James Bond.

As for the missing details...well, if you're downloading the profiles from the database, anything missing is up to you to replace.  You may have noticed that you can vote on contributions...that's people filling in/fixing the incorrect data that has been entered.  If you find something missing and you verify it from the disc, please contribute according to the rules (we're pretty big on those around here! lol) Otherwise, feel free to keep things local how you want them organized.
