There is a profile up for vote that lists the VFX company as a divider in the crew list. I see nothing in the rules to allow this.

What are your thoughts on this topic?

I'm guessing this is related to a discussion that's been going on in the Features Request forum here.

My personal opinion is that there is nothing in the rules to prevent this. As long as the actual credits themselves are presented as separate lists separated by company, it seems a valid use of dividers to me.

Edit: just seen Katatonia's post. Dividers aren't credits and they aren't roles. there is nothing in the rules (excepting TV series) to give any guidance as to what can or can't be put in a divider.

While I agree with premise, what I disagree with isn that at least this does a rationale that makes sense. And we have so many other users who are so willing to create their own interpretation of whatever Rule suits them, while CLAIMING to follow the Rules; that I think Neil's idea is valid, it lends context and structure to data which otherwise, with many films can become very blurry indeed.

If it is allowed, then nothing prevents us from also adding things like a valid Music Company/Studio listed in various film credits, or Sound Company/Studios listed with valid Sound Crew credits, etc. via Dividers.

Dividers may not be credits, but they have been accepted into the database for "bulk roles" before.

There needs to be a clear section of the rules that deals with situations where Dividers can be used. The rules are currently quite vague on the issue. Technically, they only list one thing where they can indeed be entered:

Quote:
Do not include artificial actor entries to act as separators between cast lists. (e.g. "--JAPANESE CAST--"), instead use the Divider feature for this.

The poll results on this issue are currently 50/50

Kat:

I will say this, I think there is a lot of room for divider use, I am not real crazy about this one, though I understand the rationale. I would PREFER to be able to set up the dividers within the categories. The problem with using it for Sound is that the majority of the times in Sound is that you get a company credit but no clear delineation relative to the people or even IF there are people, for example Sound by Glenn Glenn. Usually there is ONE sound company involved if there is a Sound credit, this is not true with the Effects people, there can be NUMEROUS Effects Houses involved in a given project each with their own set of personnel. It's one of many slippery slopes, but unfortunately, while under normal circumstances I might be more inclined to take a hard line, we have far too many instances where peopel are being allowed by voters and screeners to not follow the rules but to create their own interpretation and then claim to follow the Rules with their interpretation, sometimes this can involve data and sometimes this can include notes and a definitive lack of documentation.<shrugs> Maybe i am getting worn down.

And as long as there was more than one company involved each with valid crew credits then I would also consider that allowable. As long as those two provisos are met.

Tell me about it! If you read the rules literally then they don't allow dividers in the crew list at all (as they only mention cast lists).

Skip, I see this as needed for Dividers:

1.) An addition to the Rules as to where and what Dividers can be used for, so we can avoid this type of confusion, and where personal preference wouldn't come into play.

2.) Perhaps the choice of different colored Dividers: one color for Titles/Episodes/Additional Special Edition credits, another color for Sound, another color for Art, etc... Maybe even custom where you could add multiple colors in one Crew section like Visual Effects. This would help out visually where a profile uses different (or many) Dividers.

3) Dividers need to be more flexible in the Crew section. Unless I'm missing something they weren't made to be switched between different Crew sections very easily. For example, create a Divider in an existing profile with Crew and then try to move it "Up" and you'll see what I mean. I guess you'd have to enter them into the xml code manually.

I think until the rules are modified to expand the issue of Divider use, it will continute as virtually split down the middle. I can't even remember how many times I've heard "Dividers are UGLY!" in profile votes before.

Agreed on all counts, kat.

At one point Ken had commented that he was looking at more and colored dividers. There are lot of insane possible uses for them which could be helpful on both sides, which could ad some useful information, for example Special Guest Star, Also Starring or Featuring, would I use them...I don't know I might.

But like you I believe user interpretation is always BAD.
