Since I don't want to completely redo the full page of posts describing the path I took to come to this conclusion - I will just note that the complete discussion can be found in the LoadDVD thread in the Plugins forum on dates 1/31 and 2/1 under my name.

The conclusion is that under Windows Vista Home Premium on both x32 and x64 machines DVD Profiler does not pass the "play" command properly.  That is, in the "personalize" tab of a DVD, in the "location" field, the word play is supposed to trigger PlayFromDisk.bat in the LoadDVD folder.

I have done clean installs on three machines, one XP SP2, one an x32 machine with Vista Home Premium, and finally an x64 machine with Vista Home Premium.  The "play" properly calls PlayFromDisk.bat under the XP SP2 machine, it fails on the other two machines.

If I can be of any help in resolving this bug, please feel free to contact me.

??
AFAIK DVDProfiler doesn't have a "Play"-command. Is it possible that you're talking about the "Load DVD"-Plugin?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

You're correct. We are actively pursuing this in the LoadDVD thread, and I've already told buckfoss that it was unlikely a Profiler issue. For the moment lets chalk this up as a premature conclusiion, and I will continue to work with the user in my thread. Thanks for the response.

My apologies.  I made a horribly incorrect assumption.  I thought that Mediadogg's LoadDVD was centered on sending the correct commands to outside multidisk DVD players.  I simply assumed that DVD Profiler would have a method to pass attributes to a media player program resident on the same computer and MediaDogg's work was on top of this.

Apparently, I am wrong on this, and I do apologize.

OTOH (with no thought of lessening my apology), you might want to seriously look at providing this functionality native to your program.  Clearly, with the advent of home media servers, this ability will be sought after even more than it is now (and you can see from the LoadDVD thread that it is well sought after).  Just a thought for future planning.

Actually you are correct. The original purpose of LoadDVD was for DVD changer support. I added the file support as a logical extension.

In fact there are a number of alternative ways for playing trailers and other media discussed in the Layouts Forum, that do not require LoadDVD.

As far as "future planning" for DVD Profiler. Allowing plugins was in fact just that - allowing the owner to watch the market and hopefully avoid pitfalls. All you have to do is read the LoadDVD thread to find out most of the issues. There is no magic that will make them go away for the main program. But at least now Ken has a heads up.
