Well, Unicus it is fairly unusual for a film such as Dark Knight to lasso a Besst Supporting nod, in this case predictable but unusual nonetheless.

I saw BENJAMIN BUTTON this last weekend and was not expecting much; I was amazed at how much I enjoyed it and it moved me.  Right now it's got my vote, though I haven't yet seen SLUMDOG or THE READER (which I thought got pretty bad reviews?)

I tend to agree. Although Johnny Depp did get nominted, in the much more competitive Best Actor category no less, for Pirates of the Caribbean.

It looks as if the memebers of the Academy went out of their way NOT to nominate The Dark Knight. The Reader? Really???

I read this complaint about popcorn films not getting a best film nod every year and I used to be in that camp.  After revisiting several years-worth of best picture winners, I've concluded that most of these films actually do have substance to them.

Nothing wrong with a good popcorn film and if somebody actually acts in one, hey, bonus.  Generally though, these summer tentpoles weren't the best crafted films of the year, which is really what this award is about.

All that being said, I'm unimpressed with the list this year.

True, but when you also have a movie that was critically acclaimed as TDK, you have the best of both worlds, right? Obviously it wouldn't have won (I'd guess it's between Benjamin Button and Slumdog Millionaire) so why not? Why not honor a film that the folks and critics both liked/loved?

Because it's very possible all the critics just love it to jump on the "we have to hype the poor dead guy" bandwagon. You seem to be on it too, looking at your avatar. Did you actually particularly like Heath Ledger back when he did flicks like The Patriot, Ten Things I Hate About You and A Knight's Tale?

I agree with you to a point as a movie can be both populare AND good.  Unfortunately, with a very few exceptions, the Academy seems to shy away from movies that are popular.  Two notable exceptions were already listed in this thread.
