Pony (not Sony), has announced the spec for a hybrid Blu-ray / DVD disc to potentially release films on both formats with a single disc. Unlike the HD-DVD/DVD hybrids of 2007, these discs contain both formats on the same side of the disc.
There are drawbacks. The first generation discs are capable of carrying DVD-9 data, but only 25Gb Blu-ray. The price is also quite high at the present. The disc meets the Blu-ray spec, but has not yet been approved by the DVD Forum until compatibility can be confirmed.

Japanese entertainment software developer Pony/Canon will release the first movie title on a hybrid Blu-ray/DVD disc in Japan in February, in an effort to accelerate the transition from the DVD to the Blu-ray format.

The Hybrid Blu-ray/DVD disc is a combination of a traditional DVD with the new high-definition Blu-ray format. Originally developed by JVC more than two years ago, the disc has a blue laser top layer (25GB); underneath there are two more layers just like an ordinary DVD (8.5GB). The Blu-ray and DVD layers are separated by a semi-reflective film that reflects blue light while it allows the red light to pass through the DVD layer underneath. The disc conforms to the "Blu-ray Disc, Hybrid Format" specifications released by the Blu-ray Disc Association.

I read about these this morning.

I think some studios may move toward releasing titles in ONLY this format to force people to purchase a Blu-ray disc.  Once they have a few of these in their collection, they might be more open to purchasing a Blu-ray player than then on to buying only Blu-ray discs.  You know that the distributors are hoping to get to one format again soon, it will be much cheaper than the dual production they are doing now with Blu-ray and DVD.

How stupid can they get? 25GB? I want my HD DVD Combos back! At least they had 30GB and DVD on the same disc.

If they want to bring more people in, they should put the Blu-ray and the DVD in the same package instead of the silly Digital Copy coasters they force on us now.

Bad joke I hope...

I agree, they can easily manufacture DVD's for pennies now...it would certainly be cheaper. Disney and Anchor Bay have already done just that on a few select releases.

Assuming they take off, I'm fairly sure that they'll get a BD50 version out before too long.
