Ever since I donwloaded the new version, I can't get past 96% during security backup withou getting a "stream read error" message. Is this a known issue?
Sorry if it's been discussed, but I tried searching in the forums and didn't find anything.

Never heard of it. Have you tried a Database Repair prior to backing up your database?

Also, what are you backing up onto?
The only time I've ever seen a "stream" mentioned in an error message on a PC has been involving reading information from network drives.

Some ideas:
Try to re-install the programme, disable the plugins and use the default layout. Did you check your HD for errors (e.g. bad cluster)? What operating system do you use? What antivirus and/or firewall etc. are active during backup?

Good luck!

I'm trying to back it up as I always did. I'm using the latest version, regular layout, on Vista. The error comes up at 96%, while attempting to backup the cover images. The backup works if I try it without the images. I've tried saving over my regular file, and I've tried a different file.
I could try the database repair, but it won't mess up my list, right?

It shouldn't. But to be on the safe side, perform a backup without images (which you say works), then copy your Images folder to somewhere else on your PC via Windows Explorer (copy, don't move it). That way any custom images will be preserved if anything does go wrong.

Well, repairing the database didn't work. I guess the next try would be re-installing.

Are you always trying to backup to the same place?
Have you tried backing up elsewhere - do you perhaps have an external hard drive you could try backing up onto?
