I am working on a silent film called Lazybones (32F3844F195707BC), a daughter disc in the Murnau and Borzage Fox Box Set (024543562207).  In the opening credits Edythe Chapman role is  "His Mother" following Buck Jones as Steve Tuttle.  In the second intertitle she is referred to as Martha Tuttle.

The question is does the role played by Edythe Chalman have to be described exactly as in the opening credit or is the intertile reference valid?

Thank you!

I would say that because the opening credits are "official" credits, whereas it sounds like the second intertitle means she's called Martha as part of the script rather than a credit, then I'd go for "His Mother" as the role.

Good question! The cast of Arrested Development is also credited like this. Reading Jason Bateman as Michael Bluth and than the rest credited as his mother, his niece etc. Currently the profile all has them credited with their names so i assume this is correct but i was going to ask this as well if i ever got around checking/correcting these dvd's.

I think you'd best go with her name, Martha Tuttle, but i'm not 100% sure though so hopefully other people respond as well.

Good luck, Paul

The Rules are very clear. If there is arole that is Credited, then that is the Role that is used. IMDb allows its users to be creative and inventive and as a result they are grossly inaccurate. There IS an exception to the Roles, if the film does not meet the criteria for the exception, then don't try.

I am having a hard time visualizing what you are describing though, Dale.

However she is credited in the credits (main credits) is how she would have to be credited in profiler.

I believe I understand what Dale is saying... you have the cast list with...

Buck Jones as Steve Tuttle
Edythe Chapman as His Mother
...
...
...

I think, since this is a silent film, he's refering to the "captioning" for the film... sort of... maybe.

oh ok... and if that is the case... we have to go with the actual credits.. not the captions.

Considering the number of queries on these forums regarding the rules, it's ironic that you insist on starting so many responses with phrases like this one.  It's even more ironic that someone who criticises the accuracy of data entered into the database would also take issue with people seeking clarification of the rules.

Intertitles are those screens of text that go between the action in silent films, generally describing some action or carrying the dialogue.

Wom6at:

The reason i say that is because i believe people are over-thinking the Rules, or sometimes simply trying to make them much more difficult than they are.. And as i explained to Dale, using the intertitle would be not unlike using the dialogue for the data, which we do not do. <shrugs>

So does that mean the profile of Arrested Development should be changed as well? I'll eventually check those credits but probably not for some time as i'm very busy right now.

A lot of TV Series don't have roles for the main cast... but if Arrested Development (Haven't watched mine yet) does have credits like those... then yes per the Rules you would have to use the roles that are provided in the credits.

It's in the opening where the narrator tells you about the Bluths and you see each actor's picture and role. For Jason Bateman it reads Michael Bluth, followed by others with 'His Sister', His son' etc'.

BTW you really should watch it if you have the time. One of the funniest shows ever made in my humble opinion.

well... with it spoken and in text credits like that I would say there is no way around it... would have to use the credits as credited.

All 3 seasons were given to me a while back... I just haven't had the chance to check it out yet. But will keep it in mind to watch soon.
