If a series is aired in another country first shouldn't the fact that the series wasn't rated at the time of it's initial on air broadcast be left unrated even if it was later re-aired and given at "TV- " rating?

I've noticed with the addition of the “TV- ” rating system to the database that I've run into a bit of an argument with myself. I've only seen this problem in anime but it could possibly pop up in other out of USA shows that are put on DVD sets or aired in the USA after their original country of origin. Seeing as the Japanese broadcasting stations do not use any rating system the question came to mind with all these new additions of ratings to various anime titles.

This is where I've run into this argument. Part of me thinks that in sticking with the Original supersedes the re-release argument and just stripping them down to the "TV-NR" rating. But the ones that are getting the ratings the ratings are from the region 1 releases so I can see how one could argue for that point as well.

Then there are the DVD’s that have suggested ages for viewing by the company that aren't "TV- " ratings but are used to by some to (for lack of a better word) guess what the show would be rated if it was to air on television in the USA.

I'm mainly just curious to hear some ideas and opinions from others on this.

Thanks
Omega

This is just a guess (as in the UK no TV programs are rated, but all DVDs are), but I would say that we're not looking for any original TV rating - we're looking for a TV rating on the DVD.
If there is no rating on the DVD cover, then we say it's NR, even if the content did originally have a rating attached to it.
So if you have a Japanese anime TV series, but an American company have put it on DVD and given it a PG rating, then we mark it as PG even though there was no such rating on the original series.
That make sense?

The answer to that is to leave off of the anime ratings (the ones that say 13-up, 16-up, etc).  Those are not official ratings, but are a voluntary rating system used by some anime distributors.

Or, if you wanted to include them for your local data, figure out what the rating would be and then put that in the slot.  But if you do that, keep it local and don't submit.  (I could see doing this if you wanted to sort or report by rating with a collection.)
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

You are right... You use the rating of the DVD... not an original rating. The main rules say to take the rating from the DVD case. And since there is not special treatment for ratings in the TV Series section... we follow the main rules for rating.

I use the rating printed on the box if it is an actual TV rating as that is the rating for the local of the DVD release being added to profiler.  One thing to be aware of is that a lot of Anime DVDs have suggested ratings (13+, 16+, etc.) which are not TV-??? ratings or MPAA ratings but just suggested viewing ages.  These should still be listed as NR as the releases are not actually rated.
