Hi all, first time poster first time user, trying the trial version before buying.
I read that I can use barcode scanner for this product so, me being me I bought a cheap chinese import of ebay!!!
The manual is horrific. I am not a dunce by any means but I have no idea what the manual means, it has all sorts of barcodes to program the unit, so scan 1 to begin program, 2 to etc etc.

The unit is a Acan CCD BARCODE READER type: FG-8100. USB with PS-2 k/b or mouse connection. Use K/B as mouse does not work at all.

It seems to bleep and flash but beyond that I am lost. help please.

Best wishes
N.

First of all: is a PS/2 Keyboard present? In an earlier thread about scanners someone noted that those wedge-ins only work when they are actually wedged in between the computer and a keyboard.
Also: try USB, it's always nicer.

So, now open the editor (or Word or something similar) and scan any barcode. Does anything besides beeping happen? A quick googling brought up the possibility that the scanner stores the scanned code, look for anything regarding sending the information inside the handbook.

If everything fails, return it an buy a CueCat

i'm a little confused as to what kind of connection this has. my searches on line seem to show it as having either a usb cable or a keyboard wedge. which does yours have?

if its a usb, from what i read its detected by xp and vista, and seems to work as keyboard input so it should just plug in, let windows install the drivers and it will work.

if its a keyboard wedge, it should have a Y adapter at the end. one end will plug in to the keyboard port on your computer and the other will have your keyboard plug into it. (so the scanner is plugged in between the keyboard and computer. Generally keyboard wedge need to have a keyboard plugged into the other side, ie you can just plug the scanner into the keyboard port without having a keyboard on the otherside.

Just thought, are you saying that it has a usb cable and comes with a usb to ps/2 adapter? if thats the case you need to plug it into your keyboard port if you are using that adapter not the mouse as its input will be keyboard input not mouse input. however the easiest/best way would be to just plug it in to an open usb port.

if your doing something else then please explain

Don't know if this will help but I found this posted in the Utteraccess Forum concerning this particular scanner:

"Hi, I think it's too late, but I just bought the same barcode reader. It's designed to work in conjunction with an ps2 keyboard. You have to connect the ps2 keyboard in one end and the scanner in the other of the supplied cable attached to the scanner, and then use the USB to ps2 converter. The ps2 keyboard has the clock signal the scanner needs. You can also connect ANOTHER USB keyboard if you want. The ps2 keyboard that you connect to the scanner is only needed by the clock signal (you can use a defective ps2 keyboard if you want). Hope this help. I use this setting under Windows XP and Vista also. It's hardware matter. Not configuration or device driver problem."

Hope it helps

Well, there's your problem right there. The Laptop obviously doesn't have a ps2 keyboard which this particular barcode scanner is designed to work in conjunction with.

does it beep when you scan a dvd barcode?
most likely you have to program the scanner if it does not read the barcode?

scan special code to start to program the reader.
enable the UPC barcode
Enable the EAN barcode
scan special code to end to program the reader.

scanner should go in the purple connector (keyboard, green is mouse)
the keyboard should go in the female connector on the scanner lead if it has ps2 connectors.

Are you running XP or Vista and in what language? English, French, Dutch ....

Don't lose the manual as there don't appear to be PDFs to download. Scanning range is about 1".

lepaknerat has already said that he is using a laptop. So no keyboard to plug into it.

lepaknerat has to find a ps2 keyboard, and connect it to the scanner, not to the laptop.

  • Laptop USB port <- ps2 usb converter < ps2 male from scanner
  • ps2 female from scanner < ps2 male from another ps2 keyboard

  • no other ps2 keyboard and the scanner does no work

Cheers Giga Wizard I will try that next when I can get the energy to try again (man flu atm)
Yes it does bleep when scanning, just no output. XP and USB only as a lappy.
I'll post again when I have tried above.
    Cheers

Get a CueCat. Less than $10 on E-Bay apparently.

you don't need the pc with legacy support! only a ps2 keyboard, it might even have keys missing as long as it gives the clock signal, perhaps a friend can help you out?
