My son discovered that one of the DVDs I picked up at a yard sale awhile ago has permanent marker written on the disc playing surface rendering the movie unplayable after an hour.

Does anyone know of a method to safely remove the "permanent" in "permanent marker" from the disc?

(It was a $1 DVD so I didn't bother checking the condition prior to purchase.  Quest for Camelot)

You might try one of those disc resurfacers if you have one.

That's a last step if nothing else works.

Removing Permanent Marker from a CD
aceton disolves the cd/dvd. last resort: wad of cotton wool with alcohol might still do the trick, when used rinse immediatly with water

It took a bit of rubbing but a Q*Tip plus rubbing alcohol got the marker off!  I'll let my son see if he can continue where he left off when he gets home from school tomorrow.

If it works, then I'll watch the movie too.

Not sure if it would work on a CD/DVD, but at work when someone uses a permanent marker on a dry erase board, writing over the permanent marker with a dry erase marker sometimes removes it!!!  Also a little WD-40 works on permanent markers, not sure if it will damage the CD/DVD however!!!

Did you know that WD-40 stands for "Water Displacement, 40th formula" (or 40th attempt)?

Nope, didn't know that. Nice little info learned here.
Unfortunately, I can't use DVDprofiler at the moment due to lack of a Windows computer.

WD-40 will also take some of the sting & itch out of fire ant bites.  It will still get red and ugly but if you spray WD-40 on quickly it never ends up hurting as much.
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!

I use WD-40 on my DVD cases to remove sticker residue (just on the plastic part of course).  WD-40 is awesome!

All you need is rubbing alcohol for permanent pens like sharpies. A microfiber towel works better than a q-tip because it does a great job of absorbing the ink.

If your CD/DVD skips, a light coating of car wax might fix the problem.
