| Posted: | | | | Hi there, i am using another collection manager program, called Extreme Movie Manager. It's been nice so far but there are a few limitations that I hope your software has not. My problem is that if I do the switch and purchase, I want to make sure I can transfert my XMM mivies to this software (or at least the films titles and catalog numbers). I can export to Excel/txt and various formats from XMM, but can I inport them into Profiler? I have a big collection of movies, so I can not do that by hand. Is that possible?
Also, does this software capture IMDB keywords, and can I then search my collection by Keywords? This is the most important feature I am missing in XMM.
Thanks for the help and advice.

| Posted: | | | | The only way to currently import is using something called the UPC Plugin which takes all your barcode numbers in a text file and creates a database template which you can then refresh from the online. If you don't have the barcode information in XMM then unfortunately it'll be a manual switchover.
Also, this software doesn't capture anything from IMDB - it's a legal issue more than anything else. This action is called data-scraping and is illegal unless you have permission from IMDB - which they charge for. The programmer of Profiler decided it'd be better to keep the software cheap and not data-scrape.
However we do have a system called "tags". You could create a "tag" for each keyword that interests you and mark your DVDs accordingly. Or you can copy & paste the keywords into the Notes section - that may also work as that is a searchable field.
Best way to tell is simply to download the software and give it a go. But remember if you add 50 or more titles then it becomes limited. So give it a go first before adding all your collection. | | | Last edited: by northbloke |

| Posted: | | | | Thanks for the replies. The fact that the data are not pulled out from imdb is actually better, I like the idea of contributions. However, the big problem remains, I have hundreds of movies listed and I really can't go through UPC's for each of them. Unless I put myself through it... will see.
Thanks anyway! D. |

Thanks anyway! D. If you decide towards it, you won't regret it! OK - it will take you some time to add the DVD's, but the end result will make it worth it - have no doubt! Hope to welcome you as DVDProfiler user shortly | | | Berak

Thanks anyway! D. You could always pick up a cheap barcode scanner like the cuecat - that would certainly speed things up! You'll find a list here of the differences between the free version and the paid version of Profiler. You could always run both Profiler and XMM together for a while and move your collection over at your leisure. | | | Last edited: by northbloke |

Skip well almost.... if you use IE 7 for a browser ( can't vouch for other browsers as I don't use anything else),, if you highlight the title in question, any where on the page, and then click on the IMDB link which is located under 'online/other sites (IMDB/Rotten tomatoes ) .. voila !! the title highlighted will go to that title in IMDB . Even using the forums here, you highlight a movie title, and in your browser toolbar- if you have IMDB listed in Toolbar Options under Buttons and the link in question is right there .. if you highlight and then click,, 'boom' back to IMDB title listed.. BUT the bigger problem for you here is the barcode.. as the other suggestions go,, the Cue cat would be the best option, priced around $10 .. usb connects.. Or by Hand-- 20 a day for say what 30 days.. ??? | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

| Posted: | | | | If you're curious about the features of the program, get the free version and try it out. You could load 5 or 10 or 20 movies and get a good idea of it's capabilities (keeping in mind that the registered version has a lot more features of course as mentioned above). That doesn't help with getting your full collection into the database, but it will answer your second question. And I agree that even if you can't find a quick and easy way to get your collection loaded, it will be totally worth it when you're done. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. | Posted: | | | | I absolutely agree with, Mar, this is the best such software out there, even if you have to manually enter your UPC #s. It really doesn't take that long.

| Posted: | | | | I don't understand what the OP's problem is. If his current Cataloging program can export his collection to .txt or Excel, and the export includes the UPC/EAN numbers, then using the UPC Import Plugin should solve the problem in adding his titles to DVD Profiler . | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

| Posted: | | | | I've had a look at this XMM and it's more a hard disk/external disk catalog program than a dvd collection program. However, this image shows that it can export UPC and as .txt files too. So, to the OP, export your current collection to a txt file and only export the UPC. then install the above-mentioned and linked UPC import plugin. Install DVD Profiler and run the plugin and import the list of UPC that you exported. That should do the trick | | | Last edited: by wjvdr |

I just looked at it myself , what a hoot. They won't be around too long, wait til Amazon/IMDb gets a load of them. For the price they are charging they are not licensing the data from IMDb, simply scraping it...ouch.

| Posted: | | | | Thanks for all your opinion. You know what, I did not realise there was a UPC field in XMM... I always pulled my movies info from imdb, but If I run a script that would pull them from a DVD site, I'll get the UPC. I know, it's illegal, but that should be the last time. I'll give the trial version a go. Thank you all.

Thanks anyway! D. I just went through the process of converting about 2300 movies over to this program. It was tedious, but well worth the effort. UPC Codes are easy to find... I just used Google (Something like "Yellowbeard UPC"). It took a few days to get all the UPCs and a full day to enter the UPCs one-by-one. |
