I've just been browsing the Microsoft Mobile PC sight and I'm more confused than ever.
According to them "Microsoft" one can do all sorts of things.  Update this, update that, download this and that, and upgrade everything else.
MMPC5 evedently is in at least 3 versions. Here in Auss. HP's new offerings that are available through the shop are v6. Oh! and v5 classic.

My question is: After purchase is it possable to up date the old OP?

Cheers.

Usually not. If it is, it will probably say so in big letters on the box.

Very often, the PDAs hardware is designed to work with a specific version of Windows Mobile. Offering upgrades could therefore cause problems hardware-wise, not to mention that the manufacturer need to provide you with a license for the OS installed on delivery and for the upgraded OS...

Yes - there's also a Standard edition.

The Classic edition is for "stand-alone" PDA's (or Pocket PC's, as Microsoft calls them), that is, for devices that is a PDA and nothing more.

If it also has a built-in phone, it is a "PDA-phone" and needs the Professional edition. However, if the "PDA_phone" lacks a touch screen, it is no longer a "PDA-phone," but a Smartphone which runs the Standard edition.

Note that DVDProfiler Mobile does not work properly on the Standard edition (in WM5 this was called "Windows Mobile for Smartphone"), as DVDP is heavily dependant on the touchscreen! If you go and buy a device, also note that many people - even those selling them - doesn't always realize the difference between a "PDA-phone" and a Smartphone - they think it is just two names for the same thing. If you plan to run DVDP on it, always make sure that the device has a touchscreen! There are a few people on these forums that - to be blunt - got screwed on that account.

to sort of expand on what Rander said as far as the differences in the version you may want to read (read next paragraph first before doing so) this entry in the Windows Mobile Team Blog as it has some very interesting information on the different versions and their names.

Now, before you go reading it, i should warn you...it may not actually help you understand the difference between all the version and may actually make the names more confusing. But if you follow Rander's advice of making sure that the device has a touch screen you should be ok.

And obviously if you post here about a specific device you are looking at, I'm sure someone will be able to let you know if it will work or not.
