I am poor sorry to say so I still have a non hd-TV or digital tv. I get digital from my cable box. So if I wanted to go buy a HD or blu ray dvd player do I need to upgrade my TV also?

Nope.

It'll be kinda a moot point buying a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc because you won't be able to view the extra detail provided by the HD format.  With a standard TV, you can't even view the full format of a DVD so it's best to hold off on the HD-DVD & Blu-Ray - even more so since they can cost over $10 more than their DVD counterpart.

The very short answer is yes.  For minute details and endless pontification, see the General Home Theater forum

Ahhh, let me expand.  No, you do not NEED to buy a HDTV to view HD movies.  But it's pointless to buy HD movies without one.

I'm not sure I agree with "pointless".

Immediately pointless, yes. But if the buyer is getting ready for a future which includes ownership of a HD TV, then not pointless, just delayed gratification.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

It's absolutely not pointless. HD-DVDs (and BluRay of course) have superior transfers most of the times, which are cleaner (less dirt and dropouts etc), virtually no compression artifacts, better colors etc. This evens shows on standard PAL (or NTSC) tvs.
