I would like to see a true alphanumeric sort in place of the computer order sort. At present, only the programmers in the family have a good chance of looking in the right place with some titles.

Thus, 8 Mile should come before 24: Series 2; and King Kong should come after rather than before Kingdom of Heaven.

Perhaps this type of sort is present by I have not found the option to turn it on. I know I can enter any text I like in the sort title field to achieve certain objectives.

Sort is purely a local choice and YOU detremine how your collection will be sorted. You can do nothing about how the Online is sorted that is determined by Invelos. You select your in personalization for the title, if you list 8 Days, it will sort numerically, if you put in Eight Days it will list it alpha. It's all up to you.

The way you can affect this is by using the Sort Title (either in the editing or personalize windows).  If you want '8 Mile' to come before '24', list it as '08 Mile' under Sort Title.  If you want 'King Kong' after 'Kingdom of Heaven', list as 'KingKong' under Sort Title.

I understand I can edit all entries containing spaces in the title to force correct sorting (in place of "computer sorting"). I am simply suggesting that as a default feature (or at least an option) the program when sorting alphabetically should do it human fashion rather than computer fashion. Most people not familiar with writing filters/sorts in computer applications would naturally expect, for example, Kingdom of Heaven to come before King Kong. Personally, I see the fact that it does not do so without my editing each title to remove spaces as a bug

King Kong should come before Kingdom of Heaven, that's standard sorting practice not something to do with computers.  Check your local library or bookstore if you don't belive me.

Yeah, I wish people would intelligently use the sort field when entering profiles.  For example, don't enter "Disk Two" in the sort field.  Leave that in the title field and use "Disk 2" in the sort.

The sort field is uploaded for new profiles but you can't edit the online collection to correct the sort two/2 stuff so others can take advantage of it.  Everyone must edit their own entries to correct.

For simplicity's sake, when a profile is downloaded, the sort title field should just be filled with whatever is in the title field at the time of the profile download, and it should be up to each user to make changes locally.

Perhaps I've worked with computers for too long (I'm a programmer by trade), but since when should 8 Mile come before 24: Series 2 or Kingdom of Heaven come before King Kong. Do the Brittish have different sorting rules than Americans?

Anyway, please DON'T change this. There would be a lot of very upset people who are used to the way things sort now.  Besides, the Sort Title will solve this issue just fine.

The Online sort is determined by Invelos and what parameters they apply I can't say. The sort otherwise HAS to be a personal choice. We used to have users who were trying to manipulate the Online database to suit there own personal preferences and we were seeing things in the Sort field like James Bond 04, INSTEAD of Thunderball. That may have suited that user just fine but what about everyone else, the Online is for ALL users. Ken tried stating simply that Sort=Title, that did not prevent the mayhem, so he ultimately had no choice but to make it a strictly local choice, with him controlling the Online sort.

It pretty much is done this way, minus any leading articles. It only fails to match the actual title when it's changed after the initial profile is accepted, e.g. Ghosts of Mars to John Carpenters Ghosts of Mars, stays as Ghosts of Mars. Unless Ken has changed this behaviour.

Technically yes, but far too many people kept trying to change it that Ken decided to make it a personal field. I'd rather it remained as such, so we don't end up with hundreds of forum threads complaining about  people trying to change them.

I surrender. I would like to clarify a few points:

1. I was NOT refering to the online sort, only the options to sort within the application for interactive and report use.
2. I suggested having a different sort as an option so as not to disturb those used to and happy with existing sorting.
3. Regarding 8 Mile coming before 24, well last time I checked, 8 was lower than 24 and most humans I think would expect therefore to see 8 Mile before 24 Hour Party - I remember from my programming days having to be careful to not check on a character-by-character position basis against ASCI ordering.
4. I used to be IT Manager for the largest distributor of DVDs in the UK with systems that could pick and pack up to 2 million items per day. The software team did not treat the space as a sort character and give it precedence over alphanumeric characters.
5. I spoke earlier with a friend who is involved in a national library and he also said sorting in our libraries does not give precedence to spaces between words. However, I looked at guidance for USA and found that you do. (See http://www.niso.org/standards/resources/tr03.pdf - I would say by default we are using the same system as "Chicago Manual 14th ed." described in that document.

I shall resign myself to removing the spaces for sorting purposes.

Perhaps  we do do it differently in England :-)

I missed that the first time around.  If it was an option and we keep the existing sort, I'd have no problem supporting your request.

In case it wasn't clear, I wasn't trying to sarcastic.  I wasn't sure if sorting was done differently outside the US or not and was honestly curious.  So thanks for supplying what you discovered in your research.  To be totally truthful, English was probably my weakest subject in school, so I wouldn't even place money on me having my facts right.

Anyway, I see no reason for you to surrender.  But I honestly don't believe you'll find much support for your request either.  You probably should use Sort Titles for now and hope that Ken will support your request at some future point.
