Displaying 'as credited' names vs common names |

| Posted: | | | | Ken, I have something that is confusing me, and probably many others as well, especially those less experienced with Profiler.
I understand how to enter the names in the edit screen for a/c and common, but the way it is displayed when looking at contributions comparisons is completely backwards.
The left column shows how it is in the current profile with no accents on the name. One of the changes was to add the common name - with accents - to the update. But it displays the accented name in the text line as if it was the a/c name. The name in brackets is actually the a/c name - I finally figured that out playing with a couple edits, but it seems like it ought to mirror the format of the current list on the left, and show the common name in brackets instead of vice versa.
I have a feeling I'm not the only one who is having trouble getting my head around that. Is that something you can do a swap on so it tracks like it did before? | | | John

| Posted: | | | | I wouldn't mind seeing them flipped either...have the 'common name' in brackets instead.
Also, when you contribute these for crew credits, the only thing you see is the 'credited as' name. The 'common name' does not appear at all in the crew evaluation. | | | ...James

| Posted: | | | | The crew thing should be fixed already (for comparisons; maybe contributions are different )... I noticed and reported it and it got fixed in the meantime (actually, I think it was fixed before you posted ) Personally, I like it the way it is (Credited As name in brackets). Maybe we need a poll | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. Registered: May 29, 2000 (at InterVocative) |

Personally, I like it the way it is (Credited As name in brackets). Maybe we need a poll The left column still lists names the same way they've always been listed. Why turn it around after 5 years? You can just as easily display the common name in the brackets, and nobody will have to relearn what goes where. | | | John

| Posted: | | | | You don't have to relearn what goes where, all you have to do is fill out the fields correctly, following the names the fields have been given.
You enter the common name in the general actor name fields, and if the end credits differ from this common name, you enter the credited version in the "credited as" field.
Since we're finally making the move to link the different credited versions of an actors' name together, it's only natural that the most important piece of information is the common name, the name an actor is normally known to audiences. So it's only natural that the common name shows up prominent in the cast listings, and to keep the data accurate have "Credited as" appended in brackets.
If it were the other way around, we'd still have cast lists displaying the same actor under different names, something we don't want anymore, which is the reason this feature was implemented. The cross linking feature is no good if I only find the actor's common name I look for as an appendix. You need to have the common name in the list, the "credited as" name is of lesser importance.
If it were the other way around, we'd (still) put the main focus on the various different spelling forms of names, instead of the actual common name. And that's exactly what was intended to change by introducing this feature: shift the focus away from the "credited as" names and put the "common name" in the spotlight. | | | Lutz | | | Last edited: by Darxon |

It's got nothing to do with filling in the correct names, it has to do with how they are displayed. Since DVDP started, the name displayed in the comparison side by side is what we now call "as credited". You had a direct 1-to-1 comparison right on the screen. Now, the right hand column has the common name where the "as credited" used to be, and "as credited" is in brackets. And it doesn't match what you see if the left column layout wise. It's confusing! and there is no need to swap them around that way. | | | John

Again, as Darxon said: the swap WAS needed to indicate that Invelos chose to shift the focus away from the "credited as" names and put the "common name" in the spotlight instead. Actor name X [credited in this particular movie as Y] is the only logical order. |

Right, and you only had one entry on each profile that needed to be displayed, there was no left and right hand side, that requires two seperate entries. Quote:

It's confusing! and there is no need to swap them around that way. Well, whenever you add something anywhere, you have to put it in a place. And the display is in itself perfectly logical. Because of the way Ken decided to name the fields (my guess is for purposes of setting up a functioning cross-linking system, but I don't know for sure) the actual credit comes in second. If the newly introduced field were called "Common name", you'd have it the other way around. But it isn't. However, I understand that it is a tad bit confusing at the beginning, but it's really not that much of a step away from what you (at least me, I don't know about everyone else) did it in the old days: Back in pre-3.0 time, you looked at a cast list and read (for example) Sean W. Scott. You (should or could have) had in your mind the knowledge that the actor's real (common) name is Sean William Scott. So all we have done is take that little bit of thought out of our heads and put it on the screen for everyone to see (so those who don't know who Sean W. Scott is at all can find him easier). | | | Lutz |
