While I understand what you're saying, I don't feel that referencing the "credit block" is an overly complicated step, and would remove ALL ambiguity on this question.  And removing ambiguity about how to do data entry of a field should be one of our primary goals I think.

Two questionable titles have been referenced in this thread.  No doubt there are many others.

I agree with this.

Terminator Salvation looks to be the copyrighted name for the movie.

While there are varients of the title also copyrighted, the one I directly linked is the only one that is labled "MOTION PICTURE" as the "Type of Work".

We must remember that we are after the DVD Title, not necessarily the Movie Title.  That's why I would not want to use the Copyright Office as the source for this.

The credit block, which is part of the DVD release, would only be used for clarification for the two situations; episode descriptors/subtitles and possessives.

I don't see how this would cause the end of the world as we know it.

But we don't use the copyright office data, Alien. We use the front cover AND follow the Rules to determine the title for Profiler. As I have noted IF we are after absolute accuracy, then the copyright office is the ONLY answer, because that answer is provided without artistic influence, logo influence or marketing. But do we really want to go there...I don't think so, we already have users that very sloppy and lame in their notes, so let's provide even more resiources that they have to research and note.

Based on past experience here, Alien, this is not about accuracy, this is plain and simple about what some like or don't like in the form of data and wish to try and figure out ways to exclude that which they don't like.

I think we STOP moving the goal posts, Hal.

I would not have a problem referencing it for this situation if it eliminates all debate.  That's my goal.

Could be a step for more clarity.

Which is always a good thing, in my opinion.

I agree with Skip that we should deal with them on a case by case instance.

But that would require the use of (God forbid) common sense!

That's the "A blah blah blah production, starring blah blah blah" paragraph on the back, correct?

Yeah, I can go with that.

(I still hate possessives, too. I love John Carpenter, but he can kiss my ass if he doesn't think I'm changing his stupid titles as soon as they go in the database. )

I am all for the directing people to the credit block in these instances. I believe there will be far too many variances in how people perceive it should be entered with the rules the way they are. As much as Hal has explained it in this thread, it doesn't make much difference in the grand scheme of things, people will not search the forums for this kind of clarification. So either way, the rules should be updated with something. Might as well be the thing that allows more correct data into the database.

Also, just look at the pole. I think it shows that the rules are unclear. Adding what Hal has suggested to the rules I believe would help.

Yeah, that's why I said the first one was the only one that is labeled "MOTION PICTURE" as the "Type of Work".

I can agree with this. As it stands now, people (myself included) are just guessing on what they think it should be. There is far more evidence (IN MY OPINION :D ) that says it should be sans colon, but even I personally prefer with the colon.

But, like Hal suggested, going by credit block is a fair way to go, and the rules should be updated to reflect that.

My sort title for this movie is Terminator 4: Terminator Salvation, if that's any hint to how I voted on this subject.
