You know, that's an excellent point.

Unfortunately, if you own a disc that a user who post in the forum owns and you do an update to said disc, your submission will most likely be declined if the hidden secret rules aren't followed.

So you are correct in saying Ken does not demand it, but if you don't follow the hidden double secret handshake rules, chances are highly likely your submission will be rejected.

Why would he post these clarifications if he didn't expect us to follow them? Such and idea makes no sense to me what so ever.

He sees doing it a different way then what me or you would do it. While I may not agree with his way of doing it... as I said it is his site and his online database. So I will do it as he wants it done.

Now, if you want to bang your head against the brick wall that is Ken's lack of customer service skills, be my guest, but you won't get many people to join you.  As I said in a different post, Albert Einstein once said “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”  We have all been there and done that.  Nothing has changed and, until Ken decides to hire someone to deal with Customer Service issues...or finds a willing volunteer...nothing ever will.  You either learn to live with it or you drive yourself crazy...or the rest of us...by constantly carping about it.


Then at the very least create a new forum that only a handful of community members has write access to, and create a new post that links to the original discussion thread, and a copypaste of the conclusion every time Ken weighs in on an interpretation of the rules. The rules should then include a link to this forum, explaining that this is where the amendments are.

Every time the rules document is updated, this forum can be purged. If a clarification from the forum didn't make it into the new rules, it must not have been important enough to keep.

An alternative could be to get Ken to include a tag, like "*** UPDATEDRULE ***" when he makes a decision. That way it would be possible to use the search function to find all new rules (as long as the search doesn't time out, that is).

This seems like a good idea if a compromise is all we're going to get. I agree with many of the poster's here that it's pretty unfair to assume people will read the forums to get these "secret rules" before contributing. It's just one more thing to discourage people from contributing in my opinion.

But if we aren't going to get more rule changes from Ken then this suggestion here seems like it might work, albeit still not as good as Ken or Gerri taking not even 10min out of their day to clarify and/or update the rules. I realize that many long time users are accustomed to these things but also realize that the "new breed" of customer is equally as important as veterans to this program's success.

Honestly though, I'd rather put that definition into use by carping about getting an update to the rules (something that would take almost zero time for Ken to implement) than to put it in use by screaming back and forth about the parsing of asian names for the eighth billion time...

These forums are the very definition of insanity. People fighting with the same people over and over again about the exact same topics over and over again, expecting that this time, because they scream the loudest, they'll come out on top. Nobody ever wants to work on a collaborative effort to try and have things make more sense, they all want it THEIR way and they're not afraid to bitch and moan about it to try and get others to do it their way. The only thing that will stop it is some sort of intervention from Ken or someone that has the “power” to make it so, no matter how much screaming is done here, nothing changes.

I'll take the "constructive" definition of insanity by trying to get something to change in a positive way over the useless definition of insanity by taking part in the screaming matches that happen all too often here.

The "that's just the way it is" thing doesn't fly with me, and I'm starting to see that it's flying with less and less people as time goes on. People can say that no one will ever go to that side, but I'm definitely seeing a shift in the mentality around these parts, even just since I joined up. People are tired of the "that's the way it is" excuse, and they're "mad as hell and not going to take it anymore!" 

Let’s put it this way. Say you’re… hmmm…. a mailman. You have a specific route mapped out for you each day on how to deliver your mail. The first house you have to visit, is a house on the south side of the city you live in. You go there, you deliver their mail. The second house, is a house on the north side of the city, aaaaaaalllll the way across town. Takes you an hour to drive there. You do, drop off their mail. Your third house, is directly next door to the first house you stopped at, but since it’s on the list as the third house you’re delivering to, you have to follow it that way. Would you simply say “that’s the way it is and that’s they way it’s always been done so I’ll do it that way” or would you go to your boss and say “this is dumb… why can’t I just deliver to the third house when I’m at the first house? They’re right beside each other!”

That’s the way it is? That don’t fly.

I remember the quote well Pete, but my experience this year differs. I agree the quality of submissions is more accurate, however the volume increase I would suggest is contributable to users updating one new version gimmick at a time - namely...
italics and bold in interviews
rating details
extended crew
new subtitle country availabilities
credited as
common name
media companies
uncredited / voice tags

Hence the 'volume' of submissions increase with each new gimmick introduced on a program update. I personally have not noticed a huge increase of users doing full audits or even an increase in volume of users doing full updates

Just my opinion of course

If you notice, the people who it isn't flying with are the newer users.  As I said, most of us who have been here a while, have been there and done that.  Since it is something that we can't change, we have decided to leave the brick wall alone and give our heads a rest.  Your heads are young and strong so, by all means, give that wall 'what for'.

Nice exampe, but it doesn't fit the current situation.  In your example, I am the mailman which means the way I run my route is up to me.  This, however, is not my site, so the way it is run, is not up to me.

That's because the peopel who couldn't put up with it (a lot, as far as I can tell), didn't stick around to become old users.
