I do as well... about as simple and easy to understand as you can get. Though I would like to see Ken put it into the rules like that so everyone is on the same page without having to point people to Ken's clarification in the forum.

While these basic things can't be stressed often enough, it may be worth pointing out that as far as Ken is concerned, it is in the rules. It's embedded in the phrase "list names exactly as they are in the credits" - that actually includes "E=e, É=é". Only because a few users misinterpreted the rules, Ken clarified how "list names exactly as they are in the credits" actually works with regards to accents: E=e and É=é. He explicitly prefaced that clarificication by saying: "We're not making a policy change here, so don't read too much into this" (full post here), which explains why the rules weren't updated: it was not a new ruling, nothing changed, it was all there already, and still is, in "list names exactly as they are in the credits". He just clarified that meaning for a few non-believers. That clarification was very welcome, of course, but it doesn't change the fact that it already was, and still is, part of "list names exactly as they are in the credits".

Oh I agree with you completely Tim... but I think this comes up enough that it may be a good idea to move this one to the rules.

And among these few non-believers, Gerri Cole, in this post, some days before Ken's "clarification".

And yet Gerri clarified even more later in that thread.

Quoting Gerri Cole:
Quote:
You should not give out a NO vote if it does not follow the nationality rules unless it is undoing where someone has already corrected it. If you dont know any better, then do what you know. If people want to vote No to that, I would expect a detailed explanation why and a subsequent contribution to make the correct changes.

Some people are interpretting it a little too literally. My clarification was to allow people the freedom to use the nationality rules if they know them. If they don't, just making capital letters small is still perfectly acceptable.
-Gerri

Bolded part by me.  However, if Ken's statements came after Gerri, I would have to assume that is how they want us to handle these type of credits.

Ken's statements indeed came after Gerri's initial comment.

Because, as you very well know, those comments were swiftly overruled by Ken.

But they clearly show what Gerri thought. And you just called people thinking that the non-believers...

And I'll happily do that again. Look: despite all the smoke and mirrors, in the end there's a crystal clear, unmistakeable clarification from Ken, saying that "We're not making a policy change here, so don't read too much into this", and explaining that for DVD Profiler purposes, "if the character used in the all-caps name is 'É', convert it to 'é' as needed to create mixed case.  If the character used in all-caps is 'E', convert it to 'e' as needed to create mixed case." There's really nothing left to misinterpret about that. Additionally, I've explained to you why this is not just a random choice, but the only right one, because it's the only way to get users from all over the world, with different backgrounds and speaking different languages, on the same page as to how we enter on-screen data into DVD Profiler. To accomplish that, we need a simple, foolproof, universally applicable approach - so that's exactly what we've got.

Although I can understand IMDb's style of linking to be something of an issue, I don't understand how there could be concerns about copying the data itself. It's a list of names. The names (supposedly) came from credits that anyone can copy.

If I start from scratch and my list ends up looking like IMDb's list, even if it's the only correct way of doing it, am I supposed to change it anyway?

I'd be curious of the "fair use" type issues related to that kind of data.

Ken has stated that he respects IMDb's copyright and license and will not knowingly violate either.  As this is his program, and it is his financial butt that is on the line, I will not go against that ruling and don't understand anybody that would.

That is your point of view. I do not need your "explanation" to judge that adding voluntarily spelling mistakes to a shared internet database is a way to pollute thousands of locals with bad data. You disagree with that analysis, but for me this choice is the worse we can imagine and will remain the worse until Ken changes it.

You never did answer the question I asked of you earlier:  Are you able to identify actors in profiles when their names are slightly misspelled (e.g. "c" instead of "ç")?  Because if you can still easily identify them the problem can't be nearly as serious as you suggest.  And if you can't identify them how can you know how their names should be spelled?
