Hmmmm...you do realize that the men aren't actually chained right? That went out decades ago. Also, the most these criminals do is pick up trash or clear brush along highways nowadays...really cruel .

Sometimes I think some folks would rather see the victims of crimes doing this work instead of the perpetrators of the crimes!

“…men aren't actually chained right?...” Can only go according what I saw on a Discovery documentary of that awful prison with it’s awful warden in Alabama – and those prisoners were shackled (the word he used) while working…

...No I do feel for the victims BUT to be mean to the criminals won’t work either, they’ll only come out more meaner & nastier than ever.

In the last couple of months some horrible things has happened to the ones close to me, Cousin – murdered while on duty (was a paramedic), Friend (s) – raped by 4 men, hi-jacked while driving home, burgled & Neighbour (Old couple) were assaulted…

All I want is justice but I don’t want revenge nor life sentences – I want them to get another chance but only once they are rehabilitated with proper education…unfortunately they won’t get it…they’ll just be put in prison to serve their sentences…and by the way they only got the murderer.

I’m more bitter & upset with our leaders, I know I should be more understanding due to our past but they’ve had 14 years to improve things. Theses criminals have nothing to loose that’s why life & dignity is so cheap.

Wow, I am terribly sorry to hear about your loss.  You said that you are interested in justice, nothing more.  Well, how does one define justice?  I am sure my idea is quite different than yours is.  That is why we have a justice system to take us down a somewhat sane path and dispense punishments for commissions of crimes.  We must trust, that the majority of the time, this system does as it is supposed to. Otherwise, we must change it.  Just because we do not always agree with the system doesn't mean that it is broken.  Personally I think there are people whom should be executed, who will never see more than life.  There are others who feel that no matter what, a person should never see death.  We must balance our legal system so it is fair and the right punishments are given out to the right persons.  That said, I hope you get whatever you consider justice is and hope that if I were even in your situation, I would get what I consider justice.

I believe that all prisons should be adapted to the model the military uses.  Every inmate has every minute of their day planned out and every activity is monitored from personal interactions to personal hygiene.  Uniforms must meet strict requirements that would make a BASIC trainee flinch.

The one major drawback is the number of additional staff needed and training.

mir,

Sorry to hear about your loved ones recent tragedies. I was close to enough of that in my previous job as a prosecutor to know how difficult and frustrating it can be - I can only imagine it is much worse when it involves those close to you.

As for some of the comments:

Dr. Killpatient -- I agree with you -- when I was a prosecutor we used to send younger and more "salvageable" defendants to a "boot camp" program that was designed to replicate a military type experience to try to instill some discipline and values in the kids -- it had some success but limited from my perspective. Overall a very worthwhile effort because prison is tough place for young offenders and doesn't really "help" them to the extent that is the goal.

Lord -- I support working inmates so long as it is for a legitimate purpose -- trash pickup -- and not done to simply punish --- the old "breaking rocks" notion. These inmates are "paying their debt to society" so why shouldn't they work while doing so. This is particularly true for food, laundry, and other services in the prisons to help defray the costs of their incarceration.

I'm speechless, Mark and horrified by the pain that you carry. We have those in  the US that are able to forgive such uncivil behavior and I daresay I admire those that have that ability, they are a better man than I. I hold such people in very low regard and do not believe them redeemable,I see them as very little different from a rabid animal, and in my book there is but one way to deal with rabid animals. So as I said, I am horrified by your pain and greatly admire your ability to forgive these ummmm animals.

I, like Skip, do not believe in coddling such animals.  Society has laws regarding proper conduct and what is or is not allowed.  Without such laws, we would have total anarchy, and it would be survival of the fittest.  These criminals have set themselves outside of society by breaking those laws, and as such have forfeited any right to compassion or consideration of leniency in any form.  As they used to say in the American west, "Give 'em a fair trial, and then hang 'em high."  Nothing brings closure to the victim's family like justice and retribution, not to mention that those animals never get the chance to do it again to somebody else.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course.  But, there are two things that I get real hardcore about.
Anyone who threatens the life or well being of a child, and anyone who rapes a girl or woman gets absolutely no quarter from me, and I would not hesitate for an instant to take them out with "extreme prejudice" as the saying goes.

So, I applaud the remedy taken in that video clip.

In situations like those, one should never take any chances when it comes to protecting the innocent. I also applaud the action taken, shown in these pictures. Apparently, some believe that you should risk the lives of innocent to also protect the criminals from any injuries. There's no compromise here. You do what you have to do, and if the safest and easiest thing is to kill the criminal, so be it. He should've thought of that before committing the crime.
