If it was up to me, original title for any TV show with a series or season indicator would simply be the name of the show.

For example:
Title: Malcolm in the Middle: Season 1
Original title: Malcolm in the Middle

Title: My Family: Series 10
Original Title: My Family

If it was up to me, we would simply have a Season Indicator.

For example:
Title: Malcolm in the Middle
Original Title: Malcolm in the Middle [obsolete]
Season: 1

Title: My Family
Original Title: My Family [obsolete]
Season: 10

Very good and sensible idea, too bad we will never see it implemented, or existing users will fight against having it implemented for... some inane reason.

Whether or not it's a secondary tool or whatever, or broken (which it SO is), it's what used to determine, as Invelos has deemed it, proper "common names" for actors that have been credited different ways in different productions over the course of their careers. And because it is broken, it gives us wildly inaccurate results at the current moment.

Adding an original title to these profiles (not changing anything, not taking away from anything, simply adding an original title) would help ease the pain of this stupid idiotic tool that we're forced to use to determine these "common names".

And in my opinion (just an opinion), it doesn't actually break any of the other rules set forth by Invelos. For profiles which have an alternate title displayed on the cover, use the title from the film's credits. Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I never remember "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Complete Sixth Season" being displayed onscreen while watching the show. So Buffy the Vampire Slayer IS the original title, and it IS different than the alternate title displayed on the cover... So... uhm... what are we arguing about here? Enter the f**king original title of Buffy the Vampire Slayer into the original title field and let's just be f**king done with it. It doesn't take away from ANYTHING, and adds in helping fix a broken tool the community is forced to used, which doesn't seem to be getting a fix anytime soon...

Seriously.
The night is calling. And it whispers to me soflty come and play.

1. We were told by invelos we need to use season indicators in original title as well. (See thread I linked to)

2. It does break something if we don't. For the people that uses Original Title as their in program list title (Tools -->Options-->Display-->Title Format-->Original Title). Then using your example they have 7 listing for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.... with no seasons listed. Breaking a currently working function And depending how they sort (Sort by Purchase Date) it can be an even bigger mess for them. So no... we can't fix one problem by breaking something that is already there and working.

So I went back and read Gerri's post and she never actually tells us to include the season indicator in the Original Title field.  She says it makes sense...she says she will add it to the list so the rule gets updates...but she never says that we need to do it.

Since she didn't tell us to do it, and it was never added to the rules, I honestly don't see how anybody can say we are supposed to be doing it.

So...

We're messing up something the entire community should be using (the CLT) to correctly link "common names" for actors/crew that have been credited various ways over the years, that would actually greatly benefit the entire community (and the forums, imagine the number of common name threads that would drop off), in favor of an unknown amount of users that could possibly be using the Original Title to sort their own personal collection when they can change the original title field to anything they want, lock it, and continue to sort their collections that way, in turn taking nothing away from anyone?

Yeah... makes sense.

Hmmmmm.

I mean, not to mention... We're talking about a thread that's six years old, posted by someone that for all we know has nothing left to do with Invelos, and hasn't posted in so long you can't even go back to check when the last time they posted was... In that six years, how many times have the rules been updated (I mean, probably not many the way this place actually works, but still) and nothing was put into it about it. As much as we want to talk about rule clarifications in the forums, can that REALLY be how we're supposed to go? When the majority of users probably don't visit the forums.

Can a guy, who's never visited the forums, and sees in the rules to use the title from the film in the original title field when the cover displays an alternate title, and thinks "Hey, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Complete Sixth Season IS different than Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and goes ahead and enters Buffy the Vampire Slayer into the Original Title field REALLY be told he's wrong??

I mean, no offense, but... c'mon guys. Seriously.

So Buffy the Vampire Slayer IS the original title, and it IS different than the alternate title displayed on the cover... So... uhm... what are we arguing about here? Enter the original title of Buffy the Vampire Slayer into the original title field and let's just be done with it.

You missed the fact that the official CLT counting for TV shows is defined as one per season. This means, if the season indicator is left off the original title, the CLT is not correct.

But the rules are not clear and were not cleared up in the last six years - as Gerri promised - therefore this community won't solve this issue anyways.

Also, what about shows like The Twilight Zone, which frequently used the same actor in the course of the series in different roles?  I feel like those need to be counted individually and not just once due to the different seasons and roles.
