Three years later, the result is that some users stopped contributing and do not use anymore the online database. This result was the beginning of this discussion (page 1 of this thread). You've repeatedly made this claim, but it makes no sense to me. Linking would still work just fine. People would just be listed under incorrectly-formatted names. |

It is tiring to have to explain each time the problem: With Ken clarification: Movie 1 : credits Mélanie LAURENT > online Mélanie Laurent Movie 2 : credits MELANIE LAURENT > online Melanie Laurent Result: No linking for that actress between movie 1 and movie 2. And I explained on previous page why we have quite never "credited as" for those cases. | | | Images from movies |

| Posted: | | | | What does anything past post #7 have to do with this topic? Please stop it. | | | My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT. FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that. Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it! |

Though the title of the thread is specific, the OP spoke in his first post of the generic problem when you download bad data from the online. I have just spent many hours rebuilding the damage . All this thread discusses mainly of this generic problem, and I do not think we are much off topic. We have moderators here, and they did not yet close the thread. Perhaps they will do, but waiting for this, I do not feel guilty to participate to this discussion. | | | Images from movies |

Have you read what is in bold in my previous post?. We "could" have linking, but we have not (and will probably never have...) | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |

What I haven't seen is any evidence that the names would be linked if we did it your way. If people won't look up the link, why would they look up the correct formatting to make it link? |

If people won't look up the link, why would they look up the correct formatting to make it link? In the past, I proposed to share correct spelling of accented names. I can do the job for French actors, and I'm sure that we would find people to do the job for Spanish, Scandinavian or any other country. A list of given-name/surname for Asian actors could also be shared. Some users already share such type of information for headshots, or screencaps from movies. At present time, we have to open common name threads that need several weeks (monthes?...) to get proper results after hours spent to examine credits. Only a very few of those threads were opened for accented names, though thousands would be needed. In one day, I can share a list of hundreds of accented names, correctly spelled, for French actors. But this is useless since Ken, one day, following the opinion of users that have no idea of european languages spelling, chose a solution that is (sorry Ken... ) a nonsense. And all those lists would be very useful when Ken will modify the name system (he said he was working on it) to get correct names in his database. | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |

This would be all well and good, but would not work in the long run. I typically do not look at the "shared" common names, when I do a profile. I enter them as I see them. I will look in the forum, if I feel that an existing one is incorrect, just to verify one way or the other. The linking will NEVER be solved, no matter what rules are made under the current system. The number of people that actually participate in the forums, is very limited (even among the people that contribute). Even with your proposal(s), there would be negligible advancement. Sorry, that is the way I see it. Until there is a change in the way the linking works within the program (server and client), I think any mods to the rules would be pointless concerning clt. But that is not a reason to enter wrong data when you know it is wrong. And that is what is asked to us. I'm disgusted to be obliged to add what I know to be spelling mistakes, and so I stopped contributing. I have now in my collection several profiles that are not at all in the database. Is that a good thing ? I do not think so... | | | Images from movies |

I have now in my collection several profiles that are not at all in the database. Is that a good thing ? I do not think so... Is it a good thing, no. It is a choice. Do not lay that on the rules or Ken or the community. You made a conscious decision to not contribute those profiles, or many updates (I presume, for I do not see your contributions). There are many rules that I do not agree with, and much data that I keep track of that isn't allowed. I still make an effort to contribute my work (within the rules), to at least share what work I can. There are many others that do the same thing. Since things are not going to change soon (given how things have gone up to this point), I suppose that you will continue to be selfish (since it is a choice that you did not contribute even partial profiles of data that you deem accurate within the rules). Not so much on the accent letters since in America we don't have accented letters. I've cut done on contributing in the past few days. And no uploading either. |

I proved I'm ready to spend many hours to share data for dvdprofiler. The maintenance of my site, with more than 20000 screencaptures, takes me much more time than took my 400 contributions (which were complete ones, not just changes). You consider me as selfish, I consider the fact to contribute wrong data knowing they are wrong as sabotage. Why spend time to participate to something that has been continously destroyed those past three years (before 2007 profiles were generally great, without any useless cosmetic features) and has now no value ? Just an opinion. BTW. I noticed in your collection several movies for which we have no screenshots on my site. I do not think you ever contributed anything to this site which is regularly visited by dvdprofiler users (about 2000 pages seen yesterday). Would you say you are selfish since you own data you could share, and keep it only for you ??? | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |
