Does anyone else feel stripped rental discs are a low blow from studios?

What a whole lot of you seem to be ignoring (not sure why) is that this strongly affects the used markets.

I don't see why it would. Those who care about the contents of a DVD will make sure the one they are buying contains the features they want.

For the others, they might not care one way or the other.

I know some people who buy only DVDs that are Full Screen. Others can't imagine watching something this way if a Widescreen version is available.

I doesn't mean that either side is "wrong". Different strokes for different folks!

Actually, it seems that it is you who does't get it.  We all understand that this practice bothers you.  We all understand that you want it to bother us as well.  Unfortunately, it doesn't and, for whatever reason, you just can't accept that.

I'm much more bothered when studios re-issue dumbed down retail versions without changing the UPC.
I recently bought the sixties version of 13 Ghosts. It used to be presented in Illusion-O and come with "ghost viewers". But Sony got cheap and re-issued it in regular black & white with almost identical cover and the same UPC.
Now that yanks my chain.

I'm completely with you on this one.
I can easily live with specially packed first releases, but the content on the disc should remain identical.
Sadly this is only wishful thinking, so you quite often find me hunting for first releases in mint condition.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

It's not even the stripped down re-release that bothers me. It's the stripped down that is in the original case. Stating that it contains the extras, then you pop it in and find out that it is a stripped down version for rental.

You're right, I don't. It's not that I can't accept it (I actually expect it pretty much from this community), I just can't understand it.

I wonder what consumer rights could be taken from someone like you in order to actually "bother" you.

If you go to Amazon and click a link for a used copy of a title from the product page (which is a retail page), people often end up with a used rental version. There's no way to verify that's what you're getting if the seller doesn't specifically say so in the description, which they very often don't.

The same holds true for other outlets or sites that sell used DVD's and fail to say they are actually stripped rental versions.

Wow grendell. You have absolutely zero knowledge of the history of the rental industry, and even  less of business and consumer rights, if such s thing actually exists. Right now the rental industry wants to buy rentals for no more than $10 per copy. That price automatically excludes extra goodies. Sorry, bud.

What consumer rights have been taken away from me?  Maybe I missed it, but I don't believe getting all the bonus features for a discounted rental price, that other people are paying full price for, was ever a consumer right.  For a buck (Red Box) or $8 a month (Netflix), the consumer should expect to rent the basic feature film.  If they want the bonus features...something given in addition to what is usual or expected...they should pay the full retail price.

Thanks, I needed a good laugh.  Beyond that, I will be polite and refrain from answering this insulting, and idiotic, question.

I've never bought a used DVD from amazon - their prices are too high for a used DVD.

The only online site I've ever bought used DVD lots from is ebay. I've probably gotten a total of a few thousand movies from that site.

Out of that total I can recall getting 2 rental copies. Since I never put a bid in for more than $2 a movie, it wouldn't even matter if it did.

When I receive any items from ebay, I always open the case up to check the DVD. Several times upon opening it I've found the case was empty. Talk about stripped versions.

I think we can finally stop here.

It seems that Grendell is one of those guys to buy a used "Dacia Logan" and next complains that this doesn't give him the same as a brand new and fully equipped Mercedes S-class.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

That is wholly uncalled for.
