In fact parsing is not really a problem. Except a few cases which are frequently discussed here, correct parsing is evident (all de, de la, di, von, van... must not be as middle name)

You cannot make so broad a statement as this, at least with the name "van."  Example: Author Eric Van Lustbader.  His surname is Lustbader and his given name(s) is Eric Van.  Maybe he's the only example of an exception to your "must not be as middle name" comment, but I doubt it.

I also do not need several name fields, one field would solve alot of issues, I never sort or do anything like that with last names in profiler.

As for me, sorting is very important, and I use it very often. The problem is that stage names and asian names are not correctly sorted, and I asked many times for a tick box which would easily solve this problem.

May i ask why/how you use sorting? If really don't understand this. If you edit a movie i presume you type in (parts of) the name and you find it. Personally i don't see any need to sort by last name. Could you explain as i try to understand

I have often wondered about this sorting as well.  Is there something, in the software, that I am missing?

Simple statistics plugin. In a few seconds, you get lists of actors, or directors, or composers (I use only those), that you can sort as you want in excel. Then you can paste partial lists in fictive profiles to work on headshots (just an example...).

I wrote "Except a few cases... ". I know that there is no universal law.  And the number of problems with Van is nothing in my collection in front of problems due to incorrect accentuation...

Thanks for the explanation.  I thought, maybe, I had missed something that was in the program.  Glad I hadn't.

Of course, there are also the multiple last names that aren't obvious, like Bonham Carter and Baron Cohen as well.

That is why I keep saying DOCUMENTATION,, Ace. Not guesses, documentation. Understand that there are places in the world that do have laws about names, but most of the world...I don't think so.

But isn't that still possible if we go to one name field?

Only if in a list you search Wayne among J,  Kidman among N and Taylor among ???. Not impossible, but it would be the only place were names are sorted like that. Simple statistics sorts on last name, as it is logic to do.

I understand you'd than have a list on first name. But if you want to add headshots for people and you know the specific person you're looking for you could still find him/her. (either in this list of by adding them to a ficticous profile, using a substring search). If you just go through all the persons in your DB i don't see how it matters if you go through them on a first or last name basis.

But that's just my opinion,

Additionally, IMHO going to a one name field should be accompanied by adding a substring search to the cast and crew window, so that surfeur's searches on "wayne", "kidman" and the like still give the desired results. That really shouldn't be to hard to implement, and it easily eliminates these concerns.

A substring search, in profiler, would not help him any any way.  I can live with the few parsing threads if it means people like him can keep the functionality they desire.  I am willing to bet Ken would agree.

Thanks for the explanation, and the support. I think that each of us uses many local possibilities of the system in different manners.  Some use galleries, others not, some use parent/chid profiles, others not, some use dividers, others not, and some use sorting by last name, and others not.

It is important not to diminish local possibilities of the program, so that everyone finds in it what he wants.

At the best, one field names will solve 10% of linking problems. "Jean Paul Belmondo" will still not link with "Jean-Paul Belmondo",  "Marie-Josée Croze" not link with "Marie-Josee Croze", "B.J. Brown" not link with "B. J. Brown" ,  "Sanya "Gai" Cheunjit" not link with "Sanya 'Gai' Cheunjit", "Chow Yun-Fat" not link with "Chow Yun Fat", nor "Zhang Ziyi" with "Ziyi Zhang"...
