The following was proposed in the Contribution Rules section, some time ago, but Ken never acted upon it.  I think it helps get at a lot of the folks (especially related to musicals) that we'd like in, and wish it would be adopted:

Quote:
Music
• Composer
- (Original) Music/Score (Composed) by/Composer

NOTE: Used only for the composer of the film's Original Score
INCORRECT ROLES: Songs by, Song/Music writers, Additional Music

• Songwriter
- Original/performed on screen Songs/Music/Lyrics/[song name] by/Writer/Written by

NOTE: Original songs written specifically for the film or for a credited work from which the film has been adapted. For screen musicals, include credited non-original songs which are performed on screen.
INCORRECT ROLES: Additional Music

• Theme By
- Theme/Title (Song/Score/Lyrics/{Song/Score [name]}) Writer/(Written) by
INCORRECT ROLES: Additional Music.

With a little jiggering, it could cover opera or other classical music that is performed onscreen.  Maybe something like this would work:

Quote:

Music
• Composer
- (Original) Music/Score (Composed) by/Composer

NOTE: Used only for the composer of the film's Original Score; also includes music (other than songs) performed onscreen, such as operas, classical music performances

Include any credited non-original songs which are performed on screen.
INCORRECT ROLES: Additional Music

• Theme By
- Theme/Title (Song/Score/Lyrics/{Song/Score [name]}) Writer/(Written) by
INCORRECT ROLES: Additional Music.

I like it, gardibolt!  That sounds like an excellent way to go with what we have.

@ Unicus: please note I spoke about the possibility of winning an Oscar (implying a definition of Original Score as something that could be entered in this category for the Academy Awards) - which precludes TV shows, TV movies etc.

To me both gardibolt's and Unicus' proposals are fine - just as long as it's clear how to handle these.

One more question: what if it's not classical music performances, but pop concerts performed live on stage? Personally, I would be inclined not to include them (song writers??), however we may run into definition problems with regard to the distinction between classical and pop music (e.g. what about jazz?).

Some things come to mind. First how about modern music opera's and the like. The Who's Tommy is the first one I think of, but other bands have made long pieces of music as well. That Tommy splits into several songs is not relevant... most opera's (etc.) are also not continuous, they break into parts.
I do not know whether Tommy already has a DVD registration of a performance, but it is about the principle.

A slightly lesser variant is a complete performance of a band's album. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon as performed by Gilmour, for instance. Or The Wall. Is that really that different because the Who called Tommy an opera and Pink Floyd didn't call theirs so? And BTW, it is not that special to pop; theme-grouped songs are well known in classical music as well (some Mahler song 'groups' come to mind).

However if you allow for an album like that, how different is it for a registration of a stage performance as you mentioned? (Classical variant: the DVD of the New Year Concert in Vienna: several pieces by many composers... even with the proposed text there is no singing there, so 'songs' may be inappropiate without clarification)

I bring this up to present the problem area's, not for immediate solution. Point is, it is not specifically about classical music, but where to stop with 'original music by' --or whatever---
Eric

If it is important, say it. Otherwise, let silence speak.

Yep, that is what I was trying to hint at.

Yeah, this points up the difficulties of definition I was talking about earlier.  But allowing performed onscreen/disallowing not performed onscreen at least is a fairly clear dividing line that doesn't require research outside of the disc itself.
