So Avatar is out one (1) sale because you do not like the movie.  Still doesn't change the fact that so many people did like the movie that it's setting records.

Clearly James Cameron has done something right.  The numbers speak for themselves.

All i will say is America makes most of the best films ever made Forum Moderator: Removed. No derogatory statements against a populace, please.

And here as well to. Why? Cause people are more casual in there viewing habits and are less likely to watch things of a more profound nature and seem to op for the lowest common denominator.

And it's a shame i guess cause it was not always so. Im not a total snob i mean i like some bad stuff or i will buy something so bad just because it's so bad like Southland Tales.

But as a film fan and not some causal watcher i don't really care for things like Avatar much as there not really films for film lovers.

Just popcorn fodder for the ignorant masses.

There is a huge difference between box office and popularity versus quality of the film But there are redeeming characteristics to many movies, with the notable exception of Plan 9 From Outer Space, but even there it has a redeeming characteristic because it is acknowledged in nearly every circle I know of as the single WORST film in history, lol.Is Avatar the best film in history, not to me, I have yet to see any film that has been able to knock out Citizen Kane, but it was a good film, good story line and no one ccan deny the skill of James Cameron, the biggest ego in the business but very talented.. It's hard to believe that he came from the Roger Corman school of film.

I think he has lost his vision as a true film maker in vanity projects like Avatar and the money it's made is only going to make him think he is doing something ground breaking when clearly it's not from an overall film making perspective.

Take a look at Christopher Nolan with The Dark Knight he takes a comic book blockbuster and turns it into one the most profound looks at post 9/11 America that was masterpiece of bridging the gap between the causal and the film buffs.

Cameron once had that edge to with T2 and he lost it.

Skip makes a good (not perfect) point. Bad films can be popular. Popular films can be bad. Not to imply that there's any inverse corolation: there's no relation at all. There are good and bad in both financially weak and strong movies.

I choose to buy this Blu-ray edition of Avatar to see if I (or any member of my family) enjoy it. None of us paid to sit in an uncontrolled audience to see it in a theater. I know we've missed the 3D effects, but if the film carries any merit beyond that one effect, then it will be worth the $20. If all it has is 3D, then I'm out the $20, but not the unpleasant experience of going to a theater.

(Plan 9 was never the worst film of all time, depite one book claiming so. It is a bad film, but a wonderfully enjoyable bad film. There are bad films which offer virtually no pleasure in seeing them, unlike Plan 9 or Robot Monster, or Manos, or El Santo films, or...)
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Indeed.  If it were as bad as some people are saying it is, it wouldn't have made as much money as it did.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Can you imagine if Plan 9 From Outer Space was given $280Million ..

It would probably still be a bad movie..

IMHO you missed nothing I went to the 3D theatrical and just went to the Panasonic roadshow for the 3d TV. I will say it did NOT knock my socks off. It did add depth to the picture, like a sveral thousand dollar Viewmaster.

I'd say there is a positive correlation between box office numbers and and quality, just not really as strong as there should be. I think Avatar has a lot of good points, but it isn't 135 times better than A Scanner Darkly from a few years earlier. In fact, A Scanner Darkly is the superior film.

With regards to the 3D, while most 3D films use it to show off, I think that Avatar used it only where necessary, not in a gimmicky way. In most 3D films I've seen, they'll have at least a couple of shots where something is thrown "out" of the screen. I don't recall that happening in Avatar.

Thanks, Cliff. I get upset every time I hear the claim that Plan 9 is the worst film ever. It's so obvious to anyone who is interested in low budget independent movies that there is a whole slew of excruciatingly bad movies out there that are way worse than Plan 9.

It seems that it's actually a myth that Harry and Michael Medved claimed in their book "Golden Turkey Awards" that Plan 9 was the worst film of all time. What they did write was that Plan 9 was the winner in a poll of the worst films. And of course people in a poll can only judge from films that they have actually seen. And few people get to see the really awful films...

Huh!!!!!!!!!!!!! You get upset/? Is Bela Lugosi your grandfather or something...it's a movie and it's bad movie...so what. There are numerous places over many years that think Plan 9 is the worst, or at the very least one of the worst. I can't remember which one but there is a fairly recent film that could challenge it maybe. But so what, many if not MOST people would list Citizen Kane as the best movie ever made, does that UPSET you to, Gunnar...please...it's only a movie. I can't imagine why you should get upset.

Skip,

I get upset (not terribly upset, but a little) when people claim that Plan 9 is the worst film ever, because it's such a ludicrous statement. In order to judge what is the worst movie ever you have to have seen every terrible movie ever made.

The chance that a really excellent movie has escaped you is a lot less than the chance that a really terribly movie has. So trying to name the best film ever is nowhere as stupid as trying to name the worst.

Of course, even in trying to name the best it will boil down to a matter of taste. And most of today's youth probably haven't even seen Citizen Kane. But that's another problem...

Well once you seen Battlefield Earth you can't imagine it getting much worse but here's a contender.
