In that instance i would probably use the copyright date and explain it in the notes.

Sounds right. However, that seems to be like a common sense decision.

I would call it logical, and I recognize that other cases could be made, Jykke. But people around here when they don't like an answer have a way of trying to come up with a mudball, like they are the first to think of something, when in fact most everything that is brought here was part of the Rules debate at some point. There is very little that i have seen here over the years that is any way original.Kind of like the first time user who comes along and has the brilliant "original" suggestion for CDProfiler.

It's all old news.

Just to make things a bit more confusing, what would be the production year of Prozac Nation?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0236640/releaseinfo

It was produced in 2000 and was premiered at a film festival 2001, but it failed to get a theatrical release (for many reasons). It had a TV premiere in Turkey in 2002 and got it's first theatrical release in 2003 in Norway. What would you say the production year for this title should be?

According to the rules it should be 2003, but that doesn't sound right either

A film festival is not considered a theatrical release.

Why not? I see no mention of this in the rules.

I also would consider a film festival a theatrical release, as long as it's open for the general public.

Likewise. In fact, recently I voted yes to a Production Year change based on it having been screened in a film festival the year prior to the year that was in the database already.

I voted yes because I saw nothing in the rules that would disqualify film festivals from counting as a theatrical release, and because I think it makes sense to allow for them to count. If a movie has a non-festival limited release in only one or two theaters we count that, so I don't see what makes festivals so special that we should discount them.

Why not just answer my question instead of insulting me?

Why is TheMadMartian's answer correct? Is there a section of the rules I'm not seeing? Did Ken or Gerri rule on this in another thread?

I'll let Martian explain it, Astra. I am tired of this kind of stuff. it's almost as if there is a desperate desire to create your own data and put it in the Online, and if you find my answer uinsulting, you have no idea how insulting I find it that somebody always wants to argue.

I have to agree that film festivals should count and I'm one of those surprised by some thinking it shouldn't. I would love to hear the reasoning.

Maurice [skipnet50|dr pavlov|jubal|woola],

Why is it that every time someone sees the issue in a different light you pull out this claim of "desire to create your own data"?

As near as I can tell almost all of the users here want the same thing - a database full of useful data about Blurays/DVDs and the programing that is on them.    One of the issues we have is defining 'useful' and in some cases 'data'.

Then why isn't it in the rules?

Do I have to be a member of a secret society to get the complete rules, that apparently has been around for ever...

If it premiered at a film festival, than that is the year I would use. There is nothing in the rules that say otherwise.

This was discussed a while back, please don't ask me to find it, and it came down to this...

Film Festival showings are 'screenings' for a small group of people in a single location...small being a relative term.
Theatrical Release is the release to the general public in multiple theaters.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.
