Before I go and submit the 'B's' out of a start of 3120 profiles I currently have a list of 1238 dodgy profiles, some are clear (with foreign text as title or overview) some are dubious down to the EAN or some with US UPC's.

How are we determining which EAN's should be UK locality?

In a Google search I found this site

which gives a list of prefix numbers per locality...can we use these Y/N?

Steve

I'd say no as some distributors just re-use the US UPC, ADV who distribute Anime in both the US & UK being a prime example.

There's a very good chance you'll find legitimate UK profiles of their titles with US cover scans as well. I've found a few when I've added the UK release to my collection, but I have a scanner so have been able to update those ones.

I'm working on the theory of "if in doubt, don't". That being said, I'm sure that I'll flag some profile for deletion which I shouldn't have, and I'm sure I'll keep plenty that should have gone. Hopefully, going throuh the submission will be a good way of double checking.

richierich, it's a bit confusing having two Stuart's working on it. Might be better to abbreviate me differently (DK or something).

Rich, I got an answer from Ken. A backup is fine (no images).

What I would suggest before doing it, is that we (a) pick a letter to start with. One with a small number. Like Z, Y or X. Then maybe get someone else to check the list of ones to be removed first. So, they've had a double check.

I've just got round to reading this thread - is there anything I can do to help, or would it be a case of too many cooks?

Pick a letter from above Northbloke, and let me know which one so we don't get 2 people working on the same ones. I'll update the list accordingly.

Cheers

OK, I might as well start with C.
I'm creating a blank database and adding all the "C" titles to it (I'm filtering any region, UK locality).
I was then planning on removing the valid ones so I'm left with a database of invalid profiles.
Is that the way you guys are doing it?

That is exactly how I've done it, and then sending a backup (minus images) to Ken

People,

I applaud you for this cleanup job. Very nice. One suggestion: Keep a copy of all the backups somewhere,  or make an export to csv (which can be imported with Good_guy's importtool). That way you can regularly check if someone has recontributed a wrong profile. Happens all the time, because someone might check their online collection, sees no info, and resubmits without actually checking locality (and more).

All the best,
Marcel

While I appreciate the effort people put into making the online database better, I also think it's "easy" to play trash(garbage)man. I rather would like people to use their energy on adding than on removing data. Sure this also needs to be done, but please do not concentrate to much on this "destroying" business.

Being done Martin

Trust me, if you took a letter and saw the amount of shiitake mushroome that is so blatantly incorrect in UK profiles you'd understand why this exercise is so important.
I expect quite a few titles once up for vote on deletion will educate other European users on the correct useage of locality. Just because it has an English title and it is region 2 does not necessarily mean it is UK locality. And for the UK users, just because you bought a dvd whilst sitting in the UK, from Hong Kong or elsewhere, does not mean it is UK locality.

The UK locality is flooded with bad data. Based upon what I've been doing, I would expect that at least 25% of it is non-UK locality profiles. Take 'The Bodyguard' as an example. There are 10 UK locality profiles for this film, of which only two are actually UK releases. You get this quite frequently and it's irritating to have to sort through the chaff to find the profile you want. It also means that there may be people using the UK profile (which is invariably of bad quality) when they could be using a far superior record from their own locality.

I've been working through 'T' for a while before I realized that the on-line list includes 'The xxxxxxx' when you search of both "The" and "xxxxxx". In other words, I've almost certainly been duplicating the work done by others.

Anyway, I've noticed something odd with the profiles that I've sent off to Ken. It seems that the profiles still exist on-line, but they no longer appear in the search. For example, take the film 'Alone' (UPC 6-416548-441214). If you enter this UPC, you are presented with a Finish profile only. You will not find it in the UK if you search by title. Download the profile, change the locality to UK and update from on-line. The profile will now change to show the 'deleted' UK profile.

Rather than removing these records from the on-line database, it seems that Ken has simply stopped them from being selected for download. Did Ken mention how he was planning on doing it to anyone else?

I've finally done 'T'... all 7k+ of them. I got a bit zombie like at time, so is anyone wiling to give my list of removals a once over (take out anything I left in when I shouldn't have)? There's less than 2000 of them.

I'll have an 'N' please Bob.
