--------------- No, profiler users are the people who created this mess we call The Rule. I know who most of them were, and they are not 'normal' people. They are people who spent way too much time in these forums, well the intervocative forums, and obsessed over the minutiae. Normal people don't care about that and would have made the rules much easier to follow. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | For those that don't know (and it appears many don't)....
The 3 most important credits in a film are:
1. Director 2. Writer (s)
screenplay, story or just "written by" In older movies: scenario, dialogue, adaptation If the film is based on other medium (source material) a credit is also usually given (eg: Charles Dickens), but not always
If the film of the screen cap above was made today the writing credits would probably simply read "screenplay by Sidney Gilliat, Joan Harrison and J.B. Priestley" or "written by,,,,", with no distinction given to who wrote what.
The Hitchcock film Blackmail (1929) has 2 writer credits: "dialogue - Benn Levy" and "adaptation - Alfred Hitchcock" (he adapted Charles Bennett's play) To leave one out (or both?) is simply insane and says a hell of a lot about who wrote these "invelos rules",,,,simply put, they know nothing about film (but have a nice collection of shiny discs)
3. Producer (s)
The next 3 most important credits:
4. Composer 5. DoP 6. Film Editor
Those are the 6 essential credits. Many film sites only include those 6, nothing else.
Watch movies, pay attention to the credits. |

They seem more interested in getting in as much "correct" data as they can even at the cost of letting some error slip in, which means they are showing some flexibility. --------------- |

| Posted: | | | | fair enough... but going by what you said:
there are some who would argue that neither of the people credited with writing dialogue for this film may be added |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting JMGuer: Quote: there are some who would argue that neither of the people credited with writing dialogue for this film may be added Yes, there are many people who believe if it deviates in the slightest from what is in the crew table then it's not allowed. I'm not one of those people. --------------- |

Watch movies, pay attention to the credits. I'm sorry, but that is 100% your opinion. I watch movies, pay attention to the credits and, speaking for myself, couldn't care less who the writer, composer, DoP or film editor were and I'm not the only one. When Profiler was first released, it only included a half dozen crew credits. It includes what we have now because those credits were essential to enough people that Ken decided they should be added. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. Now if custom entries were contributable, then we could have a different discussion.
I've put in my request.
--------------- I've been asking for this for years. I keep hoping that, one of these days, I will be pleasantly surprised. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. Watch movies, pay attention to the credits. I would love to see a program that analyzes the disc itself and pulls as much data as possible from it (perhaps with the help of AnyDVD and other software tools), and only takes minimal input from users. The 6 credits above, plus things like title, cover scans, some dates, and a handful of other user entered fields would be great. For anything beyond those fields plus information that software can pull from an inserted disc, just have external links (IMDB, etc.). That way, you could actually compare disc structure, sizes, layers, regions, audio and video tracks, and other such info for discs from different localities, something that many people would actually find useful. "I collect movies not discs" does not apply really, because the movies you collect are in fact on discs and you want information about the discs, for information about the movie, you have IMDB and Wikipedia. DVD Profiler seems to have turned into mostly a void of endless bickering and absolutely tons of useless and redundant data which serves no purpose, such as "common names". | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." | | | Last edited: by Grendell |

I no longer bother to vote on maybe more than 5% of the contributions since they contain no useful information. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

| Posted: | | | | The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. All anyone need do is: A: take a leisurely look at the online "database" (speaks volumes) B: take a look at the rules But all's well....you get exactly the kind of database you deserve. Keep smilin'. |
