--------------- I'd be happy agree if this was stated by Invelos. Until that time I'd say the door is left open for some discussion as the current rules are a tad ambiguous, even though I'd tend to side with your opinion. | | | HDTV: 52" Toshiba Regza 52XV545U AVR: Onkyo TR-707 Speakers: Paradigm Monitor 7 v6, CC-190 & Atom Monitors Subwoofer: Definitive Technology ProSub 800 BD/DVD: Oppo BDP-93 (Region Free) HD PVR: Motorola DXC3400 500GB w/ 1TB Expander BD/DVD/Game: 250GB PS3 Slim DVD/Game: 250GB XBox 360 Elite Special Edition (Black) Game: Wii Remote: Logitech Harmony One w/ PS3 Adapter WHS: Acer H341 Windows Home Server |

Granted, I'm not a native speaker and we Germans might have a better grasp of the concept of "Verboten!". It says use the title from the fron cover and then it says "DO NOT write 'the' with an upper case 'T'". There's no restriction on that rule that claims that this is only for lower case titles or upper case titles. For all titles write "the" and not "The". It couldn't be any more simpler or clearer - IMHO. So to come full circle: Where's your starting point for this being open to interpretation? | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

| Posted: | | | | I don't know about the rules being 'open to interpretation', but surely they ARE contradictory.
Why check the capitalization on the cover if a following rule says to ignore it and go with a different ruling.
There really needs to be a clarification on the main rule of 'Check capitalization of the title' following 'Use the title from the front cover'.
There's no point checking something if we are told to go with another rule moments later.
Invelos seems to think it's not open to interpretation but it obviously is.
In my mind this is a bit like asking someone...
Use the title from the cover. Check capitalization of the title Okay, now change it to 'Arthur Pendragon'. |

| Posted: | | | | The Rules might more clearly say:
"Use the title from the front cover, standardized according to the following:
...
Correct capitalization as necessary..."
Move that last bit right before "For English titles..." |

You're not interpreting, you're deciding to ignore a portion of the rule you don't like. You use the clause Quote: Check capitalization of the title. to justify ignoring the clause Quote: For English titles do not capitalize joining words such as "of", "the", "a", "in", etc. unless they are the first, last or only word of the title. Just because we check the capitalization doesn't mean we can ignore rules that override what we discover. I can't think of any reason to ignore either of these clauses if the title is in English. --------------- |

| Posted: | | | | I've always read the rule instructing us to use the title from the front cover as an indication of the data source which is to be used: the front cover, as opposed to the cover spine, the back cover, the credit block (if there is no possessive, that is), the disc label or the title screen of the movie as found on the disc.
And I've always read the other rules debated here as a specification of how to transfer the data from the source called "front cover" to the appropriate DVDP data field.
In short: the first rule tells us where to look for data, the other rules tell us how to enter them. And thus, there is no contradiction.
Therefore IMHO only My Father the Hero would be correct. | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

Just because there isn't a colon on the cover doesn't mean we can ignore it. Grammatically it could just as well be a comma which is why we should not assume it is a colon. We should ignore something that is not there However I am sure the screen credit shows the actual title and the correction can be done using the Original Title field |

| Posted: | | | | I'm with Kathy. I don't care what the online says. The correct title is "My Father, the Hero" and that's what I'd enter locally. Per the rules, the online should be, "My Father the Hero". | | | Hal |

| Posted: | | | | Thank you everyone for your input! The Rules are clearly not, eh, clear, on this. Whilst I'm tempted to bin my copy (it's not that great a film anyway) and do away with the need to contribute anything, I'm inclined to go with the majority here and leave the small t in place. I will change my submission accordingly. I realised at work today that I'm having a capitalisation life-crisis in general, Of wHIch thiS iS jUSt a sYmPtom.... Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally. So I'm an anarchist, deal with it. Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted... |

Agreed. Which rule exactly tells you to check capitalization _on the cover_? |
