The way I see it you can look at it any way you like. But for me personally... I am a very rules oriented person as you already know. So for me first and foremost is  what Ken says he wants in his database and how he  says it can be handled. In my eyes it is not up to me to...

1. Agree with Ken
2. Worry about what is in the mind of  the contributor

When it comes to voting and contributing all I care about is whether the data is accurate to the release, if it follows the rules and/or follows Ken's statement.

In my eyes... beyond that all the worries go on Ken's shoulders... not mine. If he is not worried about it then I don't have the right to worry about it. I only have the right to worry about what I allow into my local.

That is the way I see it at least. There is way to many contributors from way too many regions to worry about it beyond that.

So who knows... maybe the way you see it... I might have a lack of concern for the other users and the community as a whole as well.

This is Ken and Gerri's database and I follow the rules and guidelines they have set to the best of my ability.

In the rare instance in which I do not agree with the voters or screeners I like to provide a link that the community can read to access my rationale.

The reason I posted this thread was because I could not find the link that supplied that information and felt it was needed to support my rationale for my contribution.

Everyone has their own view on what and how they contribute data. For example, some prefer to contribute complete profiles while others only change one or two things.

Or, some people to include long and detailed contribution notes. I, on the other hand, think like Gerri:

Quoting Gerri Cole:
Quote:
I personally would not support longer contribution notes. Keep it short and simple and put the most vital information first.

Course I have a very different view of contribution notes that most of you do

-Gerri

So, once I had the requested link, I was satisfied that my contribution follows the rules and guidelines of Ken and invelos. Therefore my contribution and documentation reflect that sentiment.

I do not expect or demand that others should contribute the way I do. Nor should others expect or demand that I contribute the way they do.

All the community should expect is that the contributor and contribution are done in accordance to the rules and guidelines of invelos.

Which is all you need to do.  For those that want to know which is correct, the comparison screen shows that there was a change, and what that change was, so it is easy for those people to look it up...it's what I do.

If I have a profile, and somebody updates a capitalization, or parsing to the online DB, I understand that they will not affect my local if I have it in my DB already...

The question is this,  A profile exists, and several people make contributions that apparently alter capitalization or parsing, When I purchase that particular DVD/BD, what version do I get in my local DB when I download the new profile?  Is it the first entry or the last change submitted?

If I get to download the last submission on a new profile to my DB, then I think, we still need to get it right for the online, even though we may do something different locally.  If this is the case, then I think documentation should be submitted, for the online is being changed.

If it is the first submission, then any change later will not alter the online.  Therefore it would not matter any other subsequent submission.  This would be bad for the online, for that may make an initial faulty submission permanent in the online DB.

just thinking...

I think parsing is handled differently than capitalization, unless you're talking about the few parsing issues that are "forced" into the database.

For capitalization, I still believe that first in wins, and it does not get changed by subsequent contributions.  BUT, if you already have this name in your local in ANY profile, it doesn't matter; it will go into your local the same way every time.

Since searches and the CLT don't care about capitalization at all, I simply don't worry about it very much.  I change them locally when I catch them.

Wrong. The online profile always uses the capitalization from the local database of the last person to contribute to that particular cast or crew list. I'm always baffled by these pages of "I think that...", "I've always thought that...", "I believe that...", while the facts are perfectly obvious when you actually work with this stuff. Again: the online profile always uses the capitalization from the local database of the last person to contribute to that particular cast or crew list - that's all there is to it. So yes, any contribution that includes a capitalization change WILL change the online profile.

Except that Kathy's attitude calls her veracity into question. For all I know she might use it as an excuse to manipulate the online while hiding behind ken to do so.. plus like I said it graphically demonstrates her lack of concern for other users and the community as a whole

Example: I have a film directed by Lars von Trier (Credited with all caps) which doesn't have a Art and Sound crew contributed. OK, I add them and like to contribute. In my local db I have him as "von" and the one who contributed director credit before me contributed him as "Von". Now, even so that I didn't touch the director credit I must change him to "Von", then contribute and change him back to "von" in my local db? It doesn't make any sence and I understand that this kind of utter nonsence was one of the reasons Ken changed the way how the capitalization works.

- Instigation - is the post in the middle of a back-and-forth, or is one user resorting to namecalling in an otherwise friendly discussion?

Are you sure on this? Did you test it?
From here:
Quoting Ken Cole:

We've modified the contribution system so that it no longer considers first/middle/last parsing changes as a change to the profile.  ...

Maybe I got it wrong or a testing showed different, but if a parsing change is not considered as a change in the profile, why should the online parsing change? So first parsing of a name in a particular profile should stay?!
Thanks in advance for reply if someone had tested this and can say for sure.

I was talking about capitalization...you are talking about parsing.  I know for parsing it is last in wins.

And it was totally unnecessary to get nasty about it!

BTW Kathy once again I must ask you to look your own behavior,  it was not I who called names or made other nasty comments. I do find it very sad, though
not surprising, that you would be unwilling to include a simple statement, something like this the existing data is correct as credited invelos system is making the cap mod.
