Is this sarcasm or irony?

Or??
Since sarcasm is a sub-species of irony, irony will always be correct.
The correct answer on this question would be "cynism", BTW

(There we have it: WiseAss strikes again)
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

In Scotland it's a way of life. Got to have a good sense of humour with all the high winds and rain we get for a good 6 months of the year.

Right now where baking in heat though.

The word "sarcasm" derives from the Greek word sarkazo which means "tearing of the flesh" or "to tear flesh." It is designed to leave a wound.

Why, exactly, does anyone wish to leave wounds?
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

The word cancer is Greek for crab. Does that mean we have crabs growing inside of us

Those who get cancer that is.

In that case, Daruma, sarcasm is not what I intended. Or do you feel that example I gave was designed to wound?

So what if I change my question to "Is irony bad?"

I don't know about Daruma, but I certainly do. "Did the rules change in the meantime?" to me is snarky, and will only serve to make the person who made the mistake feel belittled.

Your second suggestion of "Did you change your opinion?" is a much better response. Especially if your goal is to "help the discussion along."

With the first response, the discussion may continue uninterrupted, but it may very well also take a left turn into insult slinging. With a straight up question like "Did you change your opinion?" you are much more likely to get a civilized response.

I guess we have a difference in opinion what is "designed to wound", then. But I accept your opinion and I'll try to be more careful in the future.

Gunnar:

You don't want me to comment, my friend. All in all, I have to say I find your question highly amusing, and you should be able to answer it on your own. You are a very sarcastic person by nature, that's not a bad thing by the way, BUT you don't like it when it is turned on you. That is your shortfall, amigo, and a common one at that.

So you find it amusing when someone is actually trying to find out if he is crossing a line, and adjust his behavior accordingly? <Had to fight hard to suppress a sarcastic comment here>

I didn't get a chance to read your original reply to the quoted sarcasm before your reply got moderated, but I'm lead to believe that it was "Grow a brain". I may be wrong, but I don't think that phrase falls under the category of sarcasm.

No, I don't Gunnar. You are misinterpreting what I was saying. I simply said that you do not like it when sarcasm is used on you, and then you ask the question. I appreciate your wanting to figure that out ,but you do need to recognize that simple truth, my friend. I have no idea what you are referring to by moderated post. There is not one for anyone in this thread.<shrugs> Maybe it's a language issue of some sort, as I pointed out in my first post your sarcasm usually appears to me to be spoiling for a fight and now you take what i thought was a comment which was, I thought, innocuous but perhaps helpful, into a something that you want to fight about. I give up, not worth it.

Of course there is nothing amusing about it and kudos to anyone who strives to adjust his/her behavior to what is accepted in the community.

I was referring to the post in another thread where I used the sarcasm "Did the rules change in the meantime" and your response was moderated.

But let's not turn this thread into mudslinging. There are enough threads like that as it is.

Thanks Skip,

I didn't mean to say that you were trying to. I meant that if I pushed this further it might turn into mudslinging. And I'll try not to start a fight where none is called for.

If it is called for, though... (But I'll burn that bridge when I come to it  )

I general I enjoy sarcasm and I think it can be as funny as it is disarming. However, the important this is that the person to whom you direct your sarcasm clearly understands this. That really depends on the situation and person you address. For example, my wife never catches sarcasm or cynicism since it's non-existent in her culture. When we were first dating, I accidentally hurt her on a few occasions because of that. So, I never use sarcasm with her anymore.

Especially in online situations you need to be careful since the written word conveys much less the intent of the message that the spoken word (no intonation, no facial expressions). Therefor in online situations I try to be extra careful although I've made errors in the past in that regard myself.

So I don't think it's a bad thing perse but you need to be careful with it.

Some Woody Allen quotes:

In Beverly Hills... they don't throw their garbage away. They make it into television shows.

There are worse things in life than death. Have you ever spent an evening with an insurance salesman?

And my parents finally realize that I'm kidnapped and they snap into action immediately: They rent out my room.

It is impossible to travel faster than the speed of light, and certainly not desirable, as one's hat keeps blowing off.
