Not as much help as I had hoped to have been... but there is/was a plug-in that allows will automatically seek out similar names in your database. You can then select a common name and boom, they're linked. Unfortunately the name eludes me.

For a rough-and-ready local linking it's a very quick process. Tracking down common names (manually) in the CLT for contribution purposes will obviously increase the time it takes. It also found "reverse name order" (great if you've got Asian actors in your db).

This would be perfect. Hopefully someone knows the name

Name Variants for Cast and Crew

Reading your comment reminded me.
I don't know if it's still supported/updated

As for sortablity in adding the cast, if you enter in "Bob", it returns all entries that start with "Bob" in either the first, middle, or last name.  There could be a switch to sort by the first word or the last word, which would catch 99% of the names.

The more text entered, the greater the limitation (or smaller list) of results.

I'm kinda now starting to wonder why we have it.  I'd still prefer an IMDB-like master list.

Doh! Just found out that the guy who made the plug-in no longer contributes and it isn't available for download.

Anyone able to send it to me somehow? It would be much appreciated.

btw, very disappointed to read his goodbye thread and the reasons behind it, but not surprised on the slightest.

It's a great tool, and still works with whatever the heck version is still accepting submissions at this point (3.5 I believe, 3.6 is the current beta version, right?)

It takes a while to load each go round (about two minutes), but I basically use it everytime I update the cast or crew section in a profile. It lets me know which names are inconsistent, and then I can search out and find the common name and apply it to the profile.

Very, very helpful.

And why anyone would rip their hair out for this thread just absolutely baffles me. There’s no fighting, no arguing, no grand proclamations that something should be changed, just a simple discussion about the positives and the negatives. There is absolutely NO harm in that at all.

I just found (quite by accident) Find Name Duplicates on DJ Doena's website. I'm not sure, but the name suggests it will do a similar thing.

I can't seem to insert the plug-in into the Profiler program. Any idea? I can extract the files fine, but when I click install I get a warning screen.
