I want Gong Li in my list of actors in the profile of the movies where she is, in accordance to asian way to show names. And I want to have Gong, Li in my sorted list of actors by surname, since Gong is her surname. The program cannot do that now. It is not a problem of online, I paid for a program to manage my collection of DVDs, and I put a request in the request forum. No more. If you don't like it, it's up to you, it's Ken's opinion that interests me.

We all payed for the program.

Where is your sorted list of actors? Whenever you input a cast or crew member, In what ever order,  the program will show up this member, either by Gong or by Li.
If you want Ken exclusively to do program work for you, you should perhaps negotiate a contract. As it stands now you ask a lot, DB change, user practice, Treating Asian Westernised Names diiferently then other Western names. And as you say for the moment it is a request. As you made this request in a public forum, it is open for discussion by the other forum users: like it or not.

But it could be done with three name fields just the same.

Yes, of course, except that nobody explained what is the real interest to have a middle name. But if Ken decides that three names and a check box is OK, that would still be far better than now.

Could be that the database grew like this by time. Why do have some people, a first name, a middle name and a last name? Why do Asians want a (translated/Westernised) name treated differntly? Giga stays a first name and Wizard the last name.

Asian westernised names would not be treated differently, however it would be nice if Asian names were treated the same as Western names!

I don't see how going to two name fields solves this problem?

Two names and a check box (to reverse sorting). Please have a look to my first post.

But it could be done with three name fields just the same.

True, but as you've said yourself - the less fields we have the less arguments there'll be about what goes where.

Agree . Some examples taken among the online for movies I have:

Reverend Thomas//Bermingham
Reverend/Michael J./Thomas
Reverend/John/Nicola
Reverend William/J./Parham
Frère Jean-Philippe// Revel

The interest of two fields seems evident..

I would wish that were true, but it;s not and there won't be. And you'll still be arguing about asian names. Compromises have been suggested and you are still arrguing, and refuse to even accept a compromise, you want it your way., you have absolutely convinced me of that.

IMO, you're complaint that the names in the cast name filter in the edit window are not listed in the proper order because of the surname issue is a non-issue. It's a substring filter so that when typing in Gong Li, the filter will return both Gong Li and Li Gong. When typing in Li Gong the filter will return both Li Gong and Gong Li.

Seeing how they came up with writing before we did, I'd say it's we who are doing it backwards.

But they want to play in our swimming pool, as it were. I have suggested before that this matter should be taken with the Asian actors that and you should explain the problem to them and request that they adjust theiur crediting so that their name will correctly treated.

Don't forget north, I have said before that John Wayne were in an Asian film and he were listed as Wayne John, I would tell you to list him as Wayne John NOT John Wayne.

Where did you get that from? The first "written language" was discovered by a German archaeologist found at the tomb of King Scorpion the First in Abydos, near Luxor, in Egypt.

Apart from the fact that it's not your place to tell us to use any compromise, the "compromise" you suggested earlier would not only violate the rules but make a mockery of the CLT. Either that or all those with Asian actors in their profiles would no longer be allowed to contribute. Neither is acceptable to me.
Quite simply, until we have an answer from Invelos this argument will continue ad infinitum.

Admittedly I am stretching it a bit, but (from Wiki):
"There have recently been discoveries of tortoise-shell carvings dating back to c. 6000 BC, but whether or not the carvings are of sufficient complexity to qualify as writing is under debate. If it is deemed to be a written language, writing in China will predate Mesopotamian cuneiform, long acknowledged as the first appearance of writing, by some 2000 years."
