| | Posted: | | | | First, an explanation for those who don't know the American football rules. - Only one forward pass can the thrown during a play and only under specific circumstances. - Lateral passing is less restrictive than forward passing but at a price (the interception and fumble rules below). - Any player can throw a lateral pass at any time during a play. - A lateral pass can be thrown overhanded or underhanded. - To be considered a lateral pass, the ball cannot make any forward progress. It must be caught on (or further behind) the same yard line from which it was thrown. - There is no limit to the number of lateral passes that can be thrown during a single play. - As with forward passes, throwing the ball in this manner leaves the ball open to be intercepted by the other team. - If the ball hits the ground during a proper lateral, it does not end the play. Instead, it becomes a fumble where either team can retrieve it and either choose to fall on the ball to stop the play or pick it up and try to advance it in their direction.
