Do you have a translation for intellectual pedestrian like me?

He's referring to the nobreak command as his name is now splitted in two thanks to the star he gained.

Dank u wel!

Ken,

I notice that when I cast a vote I am not returned to the message you voted on but to the top of the page which that message was on.  I'd rather be returned to the message I voted on - especially since it could be the last message on the page.  As it is, we have to scroll back to where we were when we were moved to give someone a thumbs up (down).

I would prefer this as well.

The the star background isn't transparent, make sure you're not running IE 6, which doesn't support transparency in PNG files.

So far, this new reputation system looks like it's made an absolutely amazing difference.  Thanks Ken!

Thanks for your post Jon, I won't lie and say I agree with every comment you make, but I respect your opinions.

The most important aspect for me is that this forum should not be a debating platform, rather a place where we can share a common love and interest of film and DVD, and help by participation and contribution in to building a better programme and database.

I couldn't agree more.  So far, a wonderful change.  I have rarely posted in the past, but I think I will now participate a bit more.  It won't be quite as exciting though without the fights.

I'm confused....

If 'censorship' (and I use the term loosely) in the forum will result in me NOT being driven away by bigoted, hateful remarks about my nationality, culture, sexual orientation etc then how can it be a bad thing?

The ONLY reason I stopped coming in here was because of the reasons above; and since this system came in I think there's a very, very noticeable decline in nastiness. Maybe, that's because the instigators are scared, maybe not....but, either way the forum is a much better place to be in.

So, if this new-found equilibrium is reached at the sacrifice of someone being able to voice their hateful opinions then it's all good!

Ah, that's it.  I first noticed the lack of transparency when I loaded up the site at work in which I have IE6 but at home I'm using Firefox.

I wondered how'd you got the edges to be so smooth.  Now I know!

They will still be able to voice any hateful opinions but they'll be quickly nipped in the bud if they do it often enough if people give them negative votes.  Plus, it'll draw attention from the admin to their posts and if it's deemed nasty enough, will probably be edited out or deleted.

DR. Killpatient.. you'll might get a negative feedback for that

I did!  *gasp*

One thing I like about the reputation page I like is that if you click on the thread you got a vote on, it'll take you to the page and post for it.  Helpful if your post is buried in a long thread.

Ken, the side effect of using the # on the URL to jump to a specific post is deterred by the image loading.  Might want to add an onload event that jumps to the anchor.

I stated my opinions based on observations over the last two months.  I purposedly did NOT name names because to do so would only create more arguments.  Anybody who is honest with themselves knows who I'm referring to anyway, and to say otherwise is disingenuous.

By the way, I asked everybody to keep an open mind, and your reply is just the sort of thing I was referring to -- you are castigating me for expressing my opinion.  If you don't agree, that's your perogative, but don't put the onus on me for having different perceptions than you do.

Hello Rifter,
I dare to anwer you as somebody who has never been ivolved in the conflict between you and other users at any time. And yes, I am really open minded! I think we have to deal with very different point of views. You, Rifter fight against any kind of paternalism, what other users may interprete as anarchism. This may be the result of different history and experiences concerning the "new" and the "old" world.
So what can we do to stop to talk at cross-purposes? IMHO we should consider this rating system as a chance to "reboot" our behaviour and start to respect eachother. This means somebody has to start by "swallowing" a possible insult and shake hands instead of starting a verbal ravage. What do you think about this? We all should be aware that we share a very wonderful hobby. DVD lovers are the good ones

Seeing my reputation status after this posting, I have to realize that I stired up a hornets' nest! Anyway - I can stand it

My biggest problem with all of this is that instead of people working their differences out the old fashioned way, we're relying on some artificial system that has the potential for abuse.  Too many people want to solve a problem by muzzling the people who disagree with their point of view.  Yes, I am opinionated; yes, I am stubborn; yes, I am blunt.  But I don't hide behind an artificial persona either.  I am what I am, and make no apologies for that.  But I also don't expect anybody else to have to apologize for being the same way.  I don't need my mommy following me around to wash out my mouth with soap if I say a naughty word.

Like I said, maybe this will work, maybe it won't.  I hope it does.  But, it saddens me greatly that people would rather turn over what amounts to their sovereignty to an artificial system.  If we're going to go down that road, I'd just as soon have a real flesh and blood moderator.

I wouldn't worry about your rep, either, at least from my point of view.  I've never had a beef with you that I can think of, and your question was reasonable both in presentation and content.

John, I think most of us agree.  But you've been around here a long time now.  You know who hates who and which groups the different users fit into.  Do you honestly believe that these people were working out their differences with the old system?  All I saw were the same old people having the same old fights year after year after year.  I don't think some people ever would have worked out their differences.  And when peace did come, it was short lived, or the players were swapped out for newbies who took up the same old fights.  And while this was going on, many good users who weren't interested in seeing the same old crap left out of disgust.

You system sounds good on paper.  It even works well most of the time in real life.  But I don't believe it was working here.

Hopefully that won't happen.  We're not supposed to hand out negative votes just because someone disagrees with us.  And there's already some evidence of Ken removing bad votes that weren't justified.  I don't think he's going to let this happen.  If you respectfully disagree with someone, you shouldn't get dinged for it.  If you rudely disagree with someone, you probably will get dinged for it.

From what I've seen, we still have a flesh and blood moderator.  I've already heard of Ken overriding votes.  And he's said this isn't meant to replace him and Gerri from performing moderator duties.  It's just a tool to assist them.
