We lost! I have to say, the referee, Webb, was one of the worst of the tournament. He really succumbed to the pressure applied by Spanish media after the announcement was made he was going to referee

Every duel was ended by a Spanish free-kick, preferably with a yellow card as well.  The goal was offside as well. But that seems to happen often for the Spanish (see the goal against Paraguay).

Yes, they were better in possession, although they didn't create many chances. Robben could, and should, have decided the game twice, and the second time the referee should have given a foul when he didn't Puyol was holding his shirt and swinging his legs across, if that isn't a foul i don't know what is!

Oh shut up you big Dutch cry baby. The ref was not biased your team brought it on them self by playing dirty football or as i like to call it total Van Bommel football to try and break the game to prevent Spain's midfield from running rings round you with there superior passing.

Just be grateful you almost held them to penalty's.

Spain won as i thought they would although i was very impressed by Germany and England got it handed to them for the reasons i predicted.

Roll on Euro 2012.

Just a small nit to pick...why is it a mirror image?
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

I have to agree. I see some Dutch press are naming the ref as the reason for their defeat. Although it's true he isn't without reproach, it wasn't all in Spain's favor, far from it. In all honesty the ref could have easily given more cards to the Dutch in the beginning of the match, including two reds for two very vicious fouls which were nothing more than personal attacks to cripple Spanish key players. One of those was the attack with studs to the chest which deserved an immediate red card, no questions asked.

In fact, when considering the game as a whole, I thought the ref was rather pro-Holland: he gave a few yellow cards to Spanish players for minor fouls whilst giving only yellow to Dutch players for very vicous fouls clearly meant to injure an opposing player.

The Dutch team created two nice chances to score but for the rest, relied on only trying to stop Spain from playing both by a strong defense as well as dirty fouls. Spain at least try to play it's usual soccer and for that I'm happy they won: football won against anti-football yesterday

And he didn't give Iniesta a red card for his push on van Bommel without ball insight. He didn't give the clear foul on Robben when he broke thought he second time. He didn't give a corner after the Sneijder free kick, the following goal kick led to the goal. And the goal was offside, look at the first intercepted pass. Clearly offside.

Now, i don't say they lost only because of the referee, the Spanish played better although they didn't create many chances. But the referee was extremely poor, as almost all referees have been poor this tournament.

Also, i always thought asking for cards was not allowed and should be punished by a card for the asker? Mr. Webb must have missed that lesson!

Nick Pearce in the Telegraph (London):

22.44: Right, it's time for me to go home and go to bed.

If you're Spanish go out and celebrate - your team are world champions. If you're Dutch, go out and celebrate - your team had a great World Cup. This game may not go down in the annals as a great World Cup final but it was never short on action, and was played at a terrific pace. Both teams had chances to win it, but Spain took theirs and that's how it goes.

p.s. And I'm/was not excited 'for the world cup', didn't even look

Yupp,
definitely a poor referee. But impartial (for a given value of "impartial"), since he treated both teams almost equal.

I think railroaded described the game very well.
So don't be too sad, we'll (hopefully) all meet again in Brazil.
And if Robben and van Persie learn when it's better to pass and when it's better to shoot on goal (and to see the difference), the Netherlands will be among the title favourites again.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

There's really no point in arguing about poor referees and "if this" and "if that".

Robben should have used the huge opportunities he was given. He didn't, and as a result Spain wins the Cup - simple as that.

And let me add that Spain is a more than worthy champion. Congratulations, Spain!

I'm not sad, it a disappointment  for the reasons i mentioned before. As Dee1959jay says, no real point discussing further, but i'm not the only one saying the referee has had a huge impact on the eventual (deserved) victory of Spain.

Spot on, Spain deserved to win. But they shouldn't complain so much about the fouls (ignoring their own dives). This is not a game for wimps, and none of the fouls were deliberately aimed at injuring opponents, like some we've seen in other matches. The kick to the chest was just unlucky, like the kick to the face in the semifinal between Urugay and the Netherlands.

I'm sorry for you that your team lost, paulb_99, and I understand your disappointment but as most have said: the ref made some errors but they were impartial. I agree that the tackle on Van Bommel was a foul and that Holland should have been given a corner kick near the end. On the other hand, had the ref correctly called all fouls, then Holland would have been playing with 10, maybe even 9, after the first 20 minutes of the game. Especially the kick to the chest was dangerous play and should've been a red card.

As for the goal was most definitely not offside as the replays clearly show with virtual lines drawn: on both occasions when the ball departed, Iniesta wasn't offside. It's a clean goal.

Spain was the better team in the end and deserved to win. But 2nd place is still a very nice result for Holland!

I agree that the darkest cloud over the entire tournament were the referees. I think I've never seen so many ref slipups in one WC. I hope for the next tournament in Brazil, they'll allow the use of cameras to aid referees.

Have to disagree here.
The kick to the face happened while both players were trying to get the ball (one by foot, the other by head). When de Jong kicked Alonso the ball was already gone and had been about 40 cm higher. From what I saw de Jong didn't attempt to play the ball but was clearly going for a tactical foul. By the way this was committed de Jong obviously accepted the possible severe harm of Alonso.

As said before this was in no way better than the action taken by Zidane in 2006 and should be treated equally.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Unfortunately another game at this WC that has the referee in the spotlight. Many bad calls, many wrong calls. This WC was a total disaster for the referees and I have no idea how the FIFA can be happy with 96% of the calls, this is utter cowpie. This WC was heavily influenced by the referees more than any other WC I have seen before. Very sad.
