If the sets within the sets have their own UPC and the UPC is on a case within a case, then that's different. because it means that the inner cases are also sold separately. In that case the movies would be attached to the UPC they're in. In this case the grand box is usually treated as a slipcase or liiteral box. What makes it tricky is that Echo Bridge sometimes puts separate UPCs on the discs themselves. If the UPC is only on the disc and nowhere else then I've been just attaching the child profiles to the grand box.

In your case, the intermediate profile level is UPC/EAN-based, in the OP’s case it is Disc ID-based. Per the rules, the former type of profile is allowed, the latter is not.

Two differences off the top of my head if the case within the case has its own UPC.

1. Expediency. Because the case within the case has its own UPC and therefore is sold separately as well, there's a good chance that it already has its own profile that can be downloaded and be added to the case. Conversely, if such a profile does not yet exist it will need to be created eventually anyway for people who own one or more part of the set within the set but don't own the larger set.

2. Release date: The version within the case could conceivably have a different release date than the box set due to being sold separately as well. However, discs within a single case are treated as having the same release date as the core profile. Even if the same disc is used in more than one set (Echo Bridge is pretty shameless here), the disc within a particular box is treated as having the same release date (and images unless packaged separately) as the core profile; in the set we're debating the images are shared by all three discs.
